Paycom Review

A quote-only HCM platform compared on real per-employee math against Paycor, Gusto, Paylocity and ADP Workforce Now, with every price checked on vendor pages in September 2026.

Independently researched. No pay-for-placement. 4 alternatives covered
TL;DR

Paycom publishes no list price and is worth a demo in 2026 when a US employer wants payroll, HR, time and talent billed as one per-employee rate instead of stacked add-ons. It is the wrong first call if finance needs a number tonight: Paycor's Basic plan starts at $99/mo plus $5 per employee, a rate Paycom's own pricing page never shows.

Every Paycom client starts on Core in each of five modules, then adds Complete module by module for features like applicant tracking, time clocks and benefits administration, all still unpriced. The company reports more than 39,000 US clients on its own about page, so this is a scaled vendor, not an unproven startup.

Compare it against the Paylocity review and the Gusto review before you book the call.

List priceNone, quote only
Clients39,000+ (company reported)

Paycom is the HCM suite a people leader considers when payroll, hiring, time tracking and performance reviews should live in one database, and a demo is an acceptable first step. The single per-employee meter only helps if you can defend a quote the site will not print.

Skip the call if the board wants a dollar figure this week, because the pricing page ends in a contact form.

HR directors, payroll managers and founders still running their own payroll are the buyers here. Core and Complete, across five modules, sit next to Paylocity, ADP Workforce Now, Paycor and Gusto.

The question that decides the shortlist is which vendor will show a dollar before a demo, and only two of these five do.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 73 payroll tools for its September 2026 payroll ranking, and Paycom is one of them.

How we compared: pricing and product pages for Paycom, Paylocity, Paycor, ADP Workforce Now and Gusto, read on 25 September 2026, plus Paycom's own about page for its client count. Inclusion was not paid, and the per-employee totals below multiply each vendor's own published rate; they are not vendor invoices.

What is Paycom?

Paycom Software is a publicly traded HCM vendor founded in 1998 and headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The company's own site says it serves more than 39,000 clients, so this is an established US payroll and HR provider, not a niche add-on.

The pricing page groups everything into five modules: Payroll, Talent Acquisition, Time and Labor Management, Talent Management and HR Management. Every client gets Core in each module and can step up to Complete module by module, rather than buying one fixed bundle.

Payroll Core includes Beti, Paycom's employee-run payroll checker, a general ledger and tax filing. Complete adds check reconciliation, daily pay, expense management and garnishment administration, none of which Core includes.

Talent Acquisition Core covers new-hire reporting and self-onboarding. Complete is where applicant tracking, background checks, drug testing and E-Verify live, so a hiring team on Core alone is still running a separate applicant tracker.

Time and Labor Core is limited to labor allocation. Scheduling, time and attendance, time clocks and time-off requests are all Complete-only, which matters for any employer with hourly shift workers.

Talent Management Core already includes employee self-service, an org chart, performance discussion forms, position management, retention dashboards and workforce analytics. Complete adds compensation budgeting and formal performance management on top.

HR Management Core is the broadest of the five: ACA tracking, document management, manager self-service, personnel action forms and workers' compensation tracking ship by default.

Complete is required for 401(k) reporting, benefits administration, COBRA administration, a learning management system, succession planning and Paycom's Global HCM for international staff.

None of the ten module tiers carries a price. Read the HRIS for small business guide before assuming Core covers a shift team, because it will not.

How Paycom works

A Paycom buyer starts with a form, not a cart, which costs calendar time before anyone sees a total. The pricing page's only action is Request meeting, and the form asks for company size and role before routing you to a rep.

Paycom's own headline is "one price for your entire workforce", meaning the per-employee rate does not change as you add Core modules, only when you step up to Complete in a given module. That is a real difference from a tier ladder like Paycor's, where each plan from Basic to HCM carries its own per-employee fee on top of its own base.

Day to day, Beti has employees review and approve their own paycheck before it runs, which Paycom positions as cutting payroll errors and HR's manual review time. That claim is Paycom's own framing; time it against your current cycle rather than accepting it as fact.

Core alone will not cover a business that needs an applicant tracker, a time clock or a benefits enrollment flow this year, since all three sit behind Complete. Budget the demo call to price every module you actually need, not just Core, or the quote you get back will undercount the real bill.

Paycom key features

Beti self-service payroll plus a general ledgerEssential
Core payroll already includes Beti, where employees review and approve their own check, a general ledger and tax filing, before any Complete upgrade. Check reconciliation, daily pay and garnishment services sit in Complete only.
Core and Complete span five separate modulesEssential
Payroll, Talent Acquisition, Time and Labor, Talent Management and HR Management each ship a Core tier by default, and each can be upgraded to Complete on its own, so a company can mix Core payroll with Complete HR.
Applicant tracking and E-Verify live in CompleteEssential
Talent Acquisition Core covers only new-hire reporting and self-onboarding. A working applicant tracker, background checks, drug testing and E-Verify are Complete-only, so a hiring surge needs the upgraded tier.
Scheduling and time clocks are also Complete-onlyEssential
Time and Labor Core is limited to labor allocation. Scheduling, time and attendance, time clocks and time-off requests all require Complete, which changes the math for any hourly or shift-based team.
Workforce analytics and an org chart ship on Core
Talent Management Core already includes employee self-service, an org chart, performance discussion forms and workforce analytics. Compensation budgeting and full performance management stay behind Complete.
Benefits administration, COBRA and an LMS need Complete
HR Management Core covers ACA tracking, document management and workers' comp tracking. 401(k) reporting, benefits administration, COBRA administration and the learning management system all require Complete.

Paycom pricing

Paycom does not print a dollar amount anywhere in its public pricing, and as of 25 September 2026 every path on the site ends at a form, so a number that is not on a Paycom quote is a guess. Budget the demo for every module you need, since Core alone skips applicant tracking, time clocks and benefits administration.

Paycor is the public comparison that answers in dollars, with four tiers running from a Basic base up to its priciest HCM tier (full breakdown in the table above). A 20-person team on the cheapest tier lands under $200/mo, and the same headcount on the priciest tier tops $400/mo, both public figures Paycom will not match until you have a proposal.

Paycor is currently running 50% off for 6 months for new customers, a promo term worth confirming at signup since it expires.

Gusto is the other public exit, also with three tiers detailed in the table. Twenty people on its mid tier totals $320/mo, a figure you can show finance before a single call.

Paylocity's Express, Enrich and Elite tiers, for companies of 1 to 50 employees, are also quote-only, and so is every tier of ADP Workforce Now, from Select through Premium.

A team that wants an invoice this week should read the Gusto review or HR software for startups before Paycom.

Paycom pros and cons

What we like

  • Core payroll already includes Beti self-service checks, a general ledger and tax filing, before any Complete upgrade.
  • More than 39,000 clients by the company's own count, and one per-employee rate rather than a per-module fee ladder.
  • Talent Management Core ships an org chart, workforce analytics and retention dashboards with no extra module fee.

What could be better

  • No published price anywhere on the site, and applicant tracking, time clocks and benefits administration all require Complete.
  • Every module upgrade is its own quote, so the total is only confirmed after a demo, never before one.

Who Paycom is for

Paycom fits a US employer that has outgrown a single-purpose payroll app and wants payroll, hiring, time and a talent process from one database, with a rep who will build the quote. The honest fit is a company willing to sit through a proposal, because a team hunting a web price will stall at the contact form.

Price Complete, not just Core, if you need an applicant tracker, time clocks or benefits administration this year, since none of those three ship on Core in their respective modules.

It is a weak fit when payroll has to be live this week on a public invoice. Gusto and Paycor both show a dollar figure without a call, and a 20-person team sees a public total from either one before ever picking up the phone.

If the real pain is applicant tracking specifically, read the applicant tracking systems guide instead of assuming Complete's built-in tracker is the strongest option in that category alone.

Paycom's homepage cites 1,000,000+ five-star ratings across Capterra, the App Store and Google Play. Treat that as Paycom's own count of five-star reviews, not an independent aggregate score, and ask for reference calls from a company your size before you sign.

The bottom line

Buy Paycom when payroll, hiring, time tracking and a talent process should live in one database, and finance can wait on a written quote before approving it. Price every module you need at the demo, not just Core, since applicant tracking, time clocks and benefits administration all require Complete.

Do not buy it to see a number on a web page. Gusto and Paycor both publish a rate before a call, unlike Paycom, and Paylocity and ADP Workforce Now stay as quote-only as Paycom.

If hiring volume is the real driver, read the applicant tracking systems guide before assuming Complete's built-in tracker is the strongest option for that job alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Paycom worth it in 2026?
Worth the demo when payroll, hiring, time and talent should run on one database and you can wait for a written quote. Core and Complete, across five modules, had no printed price as of 25 September 2026. Skip it if a team needs a dollar figure this week, and do not assume Core covers applicant tracking or time clocks, because both sit in Complete.
How much does Paycom cost?
Paycom does not publish a price. Every module, from payroll to talent management, ships a Core tier by default and a Complete tier you quote separately, so the total depends on which modules you upgrade. For comparison, Paycor's Basic plan is $99/mo plus $5 per employee, and Gusto's Simple plan is $49/mo plus $6 a person, both public figures Paycom does not offer.
Does Paycom have a free plan?
Paycom has no free plan and no published trial length; the pricing page routes every visitor to a meeting request form. Paylocity and ADP Workforce Now work the same way, both quote-only. Gusto and Paycor are the two names on this list with a published price you can see before you talk to sales.
How does Paycom compare with Paycor?
Paycor shows four priced tiers, each with its own base fee and per-employee rate (see the pricing table), plus a current promo that cuts new-customer pricing by half for 6 months. Paycom shows none of that, but bundles payroll, hiring, time and talent under one per-employee rate instead of a tier ladder. Choose Paycor for a published number under 50 employees; choose Paycom when the modules you need go beyond what a single Paycor tier bundles.
What are the best Paycom alternatives?
Gusto, for a published price and month-to-month billing. Paycor, for four priced tiers under 50 employees and a current 6-month promo. Paylocity, for a similarly quoted Grow suite capped at 50 employees. ADP Workforce Now, for a long-established quoted brand across Select, Plus and Premium. Twenty people on Gusto's mid tier totals $320/mo, a figure none of the other three will confirm without a call.
