ADP Workforce Now Review

Worth a quote in 2026 when payroll and HR have to live in one system for a midsized US employer. A poor first buy if finance needs a number on the page before anyone calls sales.

Independently researched. No pay-for-placement. 5 alternatives covered
TL;DR

ADP Workforce Now publishes no list price. Select, Plus, and Premium are quote-only, verified in September 2026. It is worth that quote for a US team past about 50 people that wants payroll and HR in one system. It is a poor buy if you need a number tonight: Gusto Simple is $49 a month plus $6 per person.

Plus is the first tier that adds benefits administration, so open enrollment is not on Select, and a team that signs Select for a benefits year has the wrong package. Only Premium adds time and attendance, so a shift team on a lower tier still needs another clock or must move up a tier. Talent, performance, compensation management, and learning are add-ons with no separate published price, and the proposal is incomplete until those lines sit on the same page.

If the shortlist is still open, start with the payroll software roundup, then read the Gusto review, where the prices are published, before you book the ADP call.

Workforce Now is the ADP suite HR leaders meet once a company is too big for a simple payroll app and not yet ready for a separate enterprise system. The compliance depth is worth a quote only if you can sign a contract the website will not price. It is a poor first buy when finance needs a number before anyone calls sales.

ADP's own navigation puts small-business payroll at 1 to 49 employees, which is the band this suite is not built to win. The product page offers one interactive demo for 50 to 999 employees and another for 1,000 and up.

The same name covers a manufacturer in the first demo and a multi-site employer in the second, so confirm which demo you were shown before the quotes are compared.

This review is for people ops, recruiting, and founders who still run hiring themselves. It sets Select, Plus, and Premium next to Gusto, BambooHR, Rippling, Paychex, and Paylocity.

Toolradar data: the September 2026 payroll ranking evaluated 71 products, and ADP is on that list. The same directory's HRIS ranking evaluated 32 products.

How we compared: product and pricing pages for ADP, Gusto, BambooHR, Rippling, Paychex, and Paylocity, read on September 23, 2026, plus ADP's Form 10-K for the year ended June 30, 2026. No vendor paid for a place in this review. A general-buyer tour of the same company lives on Dupple's ADP review.

What is ADP Workforce Now?

ADP Workforce Now is the human capital management suite from Automatic Data Processing, a company founded in 1949 and headquartered in Roseland, New Jersey.

ADP's fiscal 2026 Form 10-K says more than 90,000 mid-sized and large businesses in North America use it, and more of those businesses use Workforce Now than any other HCM built for both bands. That scale tells you the suite is widely installed, and it still does not tell you what your proposal will cost.

ADP sells global payroll as its own product, so Workforce Now stays the North American suite. A buyer who needs payroll outside that footprint is shopping a different ADP product, and this proposal will not close that gap.

Payroll and tax sit in every package: real-time processing, a preview before you submit, prorated and retroactive adjustments, a general ledger interface, and tax filing. The preview is what finance is actually buying, a chance to keep a bad run off the bank file, so people ops and finance can share one vendor instead of reconciling two.

Every package also includes guided new-hire and termination workflows, digital I-9, e-signature, unlimited document storage, surveys, and ADP Assist. A US hire does not need a side process for the I-9, and a higher tier is not how you get the form.

Compensation benchmarking is included, and the product page says the insights use monthly pay data from more than 39 million workers. A pay-band check does not require the add-on, but the merit and budget workflow is listed separately, so benchmarking will not run a raise cycle and a team that needs both still has a line to price.

Benefits administration is not on Select, and time and attendance, including scheduling and overtime reporting, is on Premium only. A team that needs both wastes the first conversation if it prices only Select, because the quote that matters is the second one.

A wider map of this category is our HRIS guide for mid-market teams.

How ADP Workforce Now works

A buyer does not start in a checkout, because ADP's compare page sends Select, Plus, and Premium to Get pricing and the self-guided demo asks for a business email before it opens. You leave the first meeting with a package name, not a rate card, so finance cannot model the year until a rep writes the proposal down.

Day to day, payroll is the loop HR and finance share. The product page describes alerts that surface unusual changes before the run, so a missed deduction does not become a Friday correction. Employees are meant to see expected pay and clear routine tasks without a ticket to HR.

Time off is where a wrong tier shows up in the weekly schedule. Scheduling, accruals, and overtime reporting sit on Premium, not on Select or Plus. A shift team on a lower tier feels that gap as a second time tool, or as overtime disputes the employee record cannot settle.

The talent add-on is a separate buy: ZipRecruiter matching, offer letters, interview scheduling, and broad job-board distribution.

Use it when the gap is getting the role posted and the offer signed, and read the applicant tracking roundup and the Greenhouse review when the gap is scorecards.

A clean req still starts with how to write a job description, because this add-on will not replace a structured ATS.

ADP describes implementation as AI-assisted, with client service after go-live. The package page does not publish an implementation fee, so put that line on the quote before you compare Workforce Now with a tool you can cancel monthly.

A base that hides setup loses to a published monthly plan once the first invoice arrives. The HRpresso brief is where we flag pricing changes like this one.

ADP Workforce Now key features

Payroll, tax filing, and a preview before submitEssential
Every package includes real-time payroll, error alerts, prorated and retroactive pay, a custom report builder, a general ledger interface, and tax filing. The preview before you submit keeps a bad run off the bank file, which is the control finance is actually buying.
HR records, onboarding, and digital I-9Essential
Guided new-hire and termination workflows, policy acknowledgements, e-signature, and unlimited document storage sit on Select as well as the higher tiers. Digital I-9 is in that block, so a US hire does not need a side process, and a higher tier is not how you get the form.
Benefits on Plus, time on PremiumEssential
Benefits administration, including open enrollment, carrier connections, and ACA services, starts on Plus. Scheduling, PTO accruals, and overtime reporting start on Premium. Buying Select and expecting both turns into a second project, not a setting you turn on later.
Compensation benchmarking on the included dataset
Compensation benchmarking is included, so a pay-band check is not an extra module. Compensation management, the merit and budget workflow, is listed separately and still has to be priced, so a raise cycle is another line on the proposal.
Talent add-on with 25,000+ job boards
Recruiting is an add-on on every package: 25,000+ job boards, ZipRecruiter matching, candidate communities, offer letters, and interview scheduling. It covers distribution, so a team that needs scorecards still pays for a structured ATS beside it.
ADP Assist and the learning add-on
ADP Assist is on all three packages, with notifications, action cards, and a virtual assistant for HR and payroll questions, so it is not a reason to buy Premium. The learning add-on lists more than 70,000 courses, and the compare page prints no price for it, so a training budget stays blank until the quote arrives.

ADP Workforce Now pricing

ADP does not print a Workforce Now dollar amount. Select, Plus, and Premium each end in Get pricing, verified on the compare page. Anyone who quotes a single per-employee rate without a written ADP proposal is guessing, and a budget built on that guess misses the add-ons that show up after the signature.

Select covers payroll, tax, HR records, onboarding, surveys, and ADP Assist. It is the wrong package if you need benefits or a time clock, because those are not settings on the entry tier. Plus is where benefits administration starts, so open enrollment lives on that tier and a Select signature will not carry a benefits team through the year.

Premium, marked most popular on the page, adds time and attendance, so the badge means the clock is included, not a lower price. Talent, performance, compensation management, HR Assist, analytics, and learning are add-ons on every package, with no separate published fee. A proposal that skips them is not the year you will pay.

Gusto publishes month-to-month prices, so finance can model an exit before it signs ADP. Simple stays single-state, which rules it out as soon as you hire across a state line. Plus adds multi-state payroll, next-day pay, and time tracking, a published route to a clock without ADP's top tier.

Premium adds a dedicated service advisor, certified HR experts, and performance tools, so that step buys people on the account.

Contractor Only is a base plus a per-contractor fee. On September 23, 2026 the page showed a limited-time base of zero against the listed rate, so confirm checkout before that promo enters a forecast.

Cheaper Gusto plans get expensive through add-ons, and the table lists each rate. Next-day pay and priority support cost extra on the lower tiers, while next-day pay is already inside Plus and Premium. A broker fee per eligible employee is waived on Premium, which can matter more than the feature gap once you count eligible heads.

The annual benefits-admin charge, the commuter minimum, and global contractor pay are in that same table. Workforce Now does not price that contractor path on the site, so an international contractor file is a separate conversation from this suite.

BambooHR prints Core, Pro, and Elite per employee per month, with a flat minimum for 25 people or fewer, so small teams do not get the per-head math yet. Payroll, benefits, and time tracking are quoted and US-only, so the public figure is the HRIS, not a payroll invoice.

Open jobs are capped by tier, and a hiring spike can force an upgrade before headcount does. Registered nonprofits get 15 percent off, which still leaves payroll on a quote.

Rippling, Paychex, and Paylocity are silent on a rate card too, so they do not rescue a buyer who needs a number tonight. Rippling's page, checked the same day, takes a headcount and returns a quote.

The platform is required, HR, finance, and IT sit on top, and some products add a monthly base beside the per-employee fee. A payroll-only buyer still pays for the platform, which is a wider purchase than Select.

Paychex names Flex Select, Flex Pro, Flex Enterprise, HR Pro, and an HR PEO, and prints no dollars. Those names help a shortlist take shape, and they still do not produce a model you can defend.

Paylocity is a contact form whose reason to book the call is payroll support for 100+ countries, a wider file than this North American suite. Modules are sold separately, so the quote is a stack, and the star rating on that page is Paylocity's own citation rather than a cost.

A 20-person company that wants a card on file this week should price HR software for startups and Gusto before Workforce Now, because that headcount still has a published invoice.

The table is the check against BambooHR, Rippling, Paychex, and Paylocity.

ADP Workforce Now pros and cons

What we like

  • ADP's fiscal 2026 10-K says more than 90,000 mid-sized and large North American businesses use it, so the bet is on a widely used suite.
  • Compensation benchmarking is included, using monthly pay data from more than 39 million workers, so a pay-band check is not an add-on.
  • The talent add-on lists 25,000+ job boards and ZipRecruiter matching, tied to onboarding, which covers distribution rather than structured interviews.

What could be better

  • Select, Plus, and Premium are quote-only, so you cannot budget the suite from the website.
  • Benefits administration starts on Plus, and time and attendance starts on Premium, so Select is the wrong quote if you need either.

Who ADP Workforce Now is for

Workforce Now fits a US people team that has outgrown a single-state payroll app and wants tax filing, an employee record, and onboarding from one vendor. The product page draws a midsized demo and another for the largest employers, and below that line you should shop a different product.

A multi-state employer that needs benefits admin and a time clock should ask for Plus or Premium, not Select, with every add-on on the same proposal. If you price Select while the clock is in scope, the second quote shows up after the budget is set, and finance reopens a number it thought was final.

It is a weak fit when the buyer wants payroll this week and a number on an invoice. That founder gets a faster answer from Gusto, or from HR software aimed at smaller teams. If the pain is laptops, app access, and payroll on one record, price Rippling, because Workforce Now does not sell itself as an IT platform.

Do not treat the talent add-on as your ATS. Use it when job distribution and the onboarding handoff are the gap, and keep a structured hiring system when scorecards are the gap, or you will pay for both.

European compliance buyers sit outside this product's North American framing in the 10-K, so a multi-country payroll requirement is a reason to leave this proposal.

ADP's page reports 4.4 out of 5 from 7,228 Capterra, GetApp, and Software Advice reviews as of July 15, 2026, and it says those ratings include incentivized reviews. Treat that as ADP's own citation and still run a payroll parallel before you sign, because stars do not reveal the implementation fee.

The bottom line

Buy Workforce Now when the company is already in ADP's midsized or large band and the pain is payroll, tax, and the employee record in one place. Ask for Plus or Premium in writing if benefits or time clocks are in scope, and make the rep price every add-on on the same page as the base. A base number without those lines is not a cost you can take to finance.

Do not buy it to discover the price: Gusto and BambooHR will tell you the entry rate before a call, and Rippling, Paychex, and Paylocity will not. A fair comparison is three written quotes against those two published ladders, for the same headcount and the same states.

Skip it while you are still under ADP's midsized line, skip it when IT provisioning is half the project, and skip the talent add-on as your only recruiting system if structured interviews are the actual problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is ADP Workforce Now worth it in 2026?
Yes, for a US employer past about 50 people that wants payroll, tax filing, and HR records from one vendor and will wait for a written quote. ADP publishes no Select, Plus, or Premium price, verified in September 2026, so the worth-it test is the proposal, not the website. It is not worth it for a small team that can run on a published month-to-month plan, or for a buyer who needs benefits and a time clock but only prices Select, because those modules sit on higher tiers.
How much does ADP Workforce Now cost?
ADP does not publish a Workforce Now price: Select, Plus, and Premium are custom quotes, and talent, performance, compensation management, HR Assist, and learning have no separate list fee, so the number you can defend is the proposal that carries every line. For a published benchmark on the same headcount, Gusto Simple is $49 a month plus a per-person fee, BambooHR Core is $10 per employee per month, and teams of 25 or fewer pay a flat minimum from $250 a month.
Does ADP Workforce Now have a free plan?
Workforce Now has no free plan: the compare page offers Get pricing and a self-guided demo that asks for a business email, with no permanent free tier and no public trial length, so a live payroll run waits on a sales conversation. Gusto and BambooHR also have no free plan, while Gusto is month to month with a printed entry price, which is how you see a payroll invoice before an ADP contract.
How does ADP Workforce Now compare with Gusto?
Gusto prints Simple, Plus, and Premium prices and lets you cancel monthly, with unlimited payroll runs on every plan, so finance can leave if the invoice is wrong. Workforce Now prints no price, puts benefits on Plus, and holds time and attendance for Premium, so the wrong tier becomes a second project rather than a settings change. Pick Gusto when the company is still small and finance wants the invoice before the demo. Pick Workforce Now when headcount is in the midsized band or among the largest employers and tax filing at that scale is why you called.
What are the best ADP Workforce Now alternatives?
Gusto, when you want a published US payroll price and month-to-month terms, which is the exit if you refuse to wait on a quote. BambooHR, when you want a published HRIS rate and will quote US payroll as an add-on. Rippling, when HR, payroll, and IT should share one record and you will accept another quote. Paychex and Paylocity, when you want another full-service payroll name and will compare written proposals rather than web prices. ADP's own RUN packages are the small-business line, for the 1 to 49 employee band, and they are a different product from Workforce Now, so do not let a rep substitute one quote for the other.
