TL;DR

7shifts is worth it in 2026 for a US restaurant with 16 to 30 staff on one address, where Essentials costs $39.99 per location a month on annual billing ($44.99 monthly) and the per-user schedulers charge more at that headcount. Comp is free for one location and up to 15 employees. Pro is $79.99 and Premium $134.99 per location a month on annual billing, and both remove the employee cap.

The catch is the two-sided price: Essentials stops at 30 employees, so the 31st hire pushes a site onto Pro, and payroll is a separate add-on with its own location fee plus $6 per employee paid. Homebase is the closest rival, at $30 per location a month on Essentials with no headcount cap, and it is the one to price before signing.

  • Best for: US restaurants with 16 to 30 staff per location that want tips, compliance and a clock in one app.

  • Restaurant scheduling priced per location, with a free 15-person plan and payroll sold as a US add-on.
  • Billing: Per location per month, USD, monthly or annual
  • Free plan: Comp covers one location and up to 15 employees
  • Trial: 14 days of the Pro plan, no card

Pros

  • Comp is free for one location and up to 15 employees, with no card and no expiry.
  • Pro covers up to 60 employees per location and Premium is unlimited, so a 60-person site still pays one flat Pro rate.
  • Tip Management, Labor Compliance and Manager Log Book are restaurant modules per-user schedulers lack.

Cons

  • Essentials caps at 30 employees, so the 31st hire doubles the location price to Pro.
  • Payroll, tips, log book and tasks are each a per-location add-on, so the real bill can be two to three times the plan price.

7shifts prices by the restaurant, not by the head, which is the right model for a kitchen that doubles its roster every summer and the wrong one for a four-person coffee cart. Toolradar data: 7shifts is the joint second most-listed alternative among the 56 food and restaurant tools in Toolradar's October 2026 ranking, the software directory we run, and its directory page lists it as freemium.

This review prices Comp, Essentials, Pro and Premium against Homebase, Sling, Deputy and When I Work, and works the bill for a 25-person site and a three-location group. Every price was read on the vendor's own pages in October 2026.

What is 7shifts?

7shifts is a restaurant team platform built around the shift schedule. It bundles scheduling, a time clock, labor compliance, team chat, a manager log book, task lists, tip pooling and payouts, hiring and onboarding, training, and a US payroll add-on. The vendor sells it to bakeries, bars, cafes, pizzerias, quick service and multi-location groups, and the feature names on the site reflect that: Manager Log Book, Tip Management, Labor Compliance, On-Demand Pay.

Unlike Deputy or When I Work, which are general-purpose per-user schedulers, 7shifts assumes front of house and back of house, tip pools and POS sales data. That focus is the reason to pick it, and the reason a non-restaurant team should look at our shift scheduling software ranking instead.

How 7shifts works

Sign-up opens a 14-day trial of the Pro plan with no credit card, and when the trial ends the account drops to the free Comp plan or to a paid plan the owner chooses. 7shifts bills monthly or annually by credit card, with ACH on request. A customer who cancels pays the current month and nothing more, unless they signed an enterprise term agreement.

The Comp plan is where most owners start: one location, up to 15 employees, basic scheduling and one-way announcements. The daily loop is short. Build the schedule from a template, publish it to the mobile app, let staff swap shifts and request time off, then approve timesheets before they go to payroll. Franchises and groups can ask for a negotiated plan, which 7shifts says it offers but does not price.

7shifts key features

Location pricing with an employee cap on the entry tierEssential
Essentials covers up to 30 employees per location, Pro up to 60 and Premium is unlimited. A 28-person site pays the entry rate, a 32-person site pays double. For a restaurant that staffs up for a season, that cap is the number to watch, and it is the main reason this review models two headcounts below.
Comp, the free plan that is actually usable for a small siteEssential
Comp carries scheduling and one-way announcements for one location and up to 15 employees, with no card and no expiry. A single cafe or juice bar can run its rota on it for years without paying. The vendor lists only basic scheduling and announcements on it, so the moment hours need to be tracked for pay, the site moves to a paid tier.
Payroll as a priced add-on, not a bundled tier
7shifts Payroll adds a monthly fee per location plus a fee per employee paid (both in the pricing table), and it can be added to any paid tier. The vendor publishes extra charges on top: rush next-day pay, printed tax documents and a failed-funding charge. Payroll is US only, so Canadian sites keep their existing provider and export hours instead.
Tip Management and the manager tools are each priced per location
Tip Management lists at $49.99 per location a month, Manager Log Book at $14.99 and Task Management at $12.99, each per location. A single site on Essentials that adds tips and the log book more than doubles its subscription, so the add-ons decide the real price more than the plan does.
Labor compliance built for hourly restaurant rules
The Labor Compliance module flags break, overtime and scheduling rules as the manager builds the week, which matters in states with predictive scheduling laws. It is not part of Comp's basic scheduling, so a site that stays on the free plan gets none of it.
Hiring, onboarding and training in the same login
The Hire and Train modules add job posting, document storage, onboarding and an AI course builder for microlearning. They turn 7shifts from a scheduler into a thin HR platform for a restaurant that has no HRIS, which describes most independents. A group that already runs an HRIS will pay for overlap.

7shifts pricing

7shifts lists four plans per location per month in USD, with the annual rate about 10% below the monthly rate: Comp free, Essentials $44.99 monthly, Pro $89.99 monthly and Premium $149.99 monthly, with the annual figures in the table. Prices were read in October 2026 on the 7shifts pricing page and its own comparison pages, and the payroll rate on the vendor's payroll guidance, which also states the 14-day Pro trial.

Scenario one, a single restaurant with 25 staff that needs a clock: Essentials on annual billing is $479.88 a year, and on monthly billing $539.88. At that headcount Homebase Essentials costs $30 a month, Sling Business $85 ($3.40 per user on annual billing), When I Work Pro $125 and Deputy Core $162.50. 7shifts sits second on price and first on restaurant features.

Scenario two, a three-location group with 40 staff per site that runs payroll through 7shifts: Pro on annual billing is $239.97 a month for the three sites, and payroll adds three location fees and 120 employee fees, $839.97, for roughly $1,080 a month before tip management. The same group on Homebase Essentials would pay $90 for scheduling and $49 + $720 for payroll, about $859 a month, with fewer restaurant-specific tools.

Three gotchas move the bill. The 30-employee cap on Essentials doubles the per-location price at the 31st hire. Add-ons are per location, so a three-site group pays Tip Management three times. And the payroll fee counts employees paid, not employees scheduled, so seasonal staff on the books push it up. Competitor prices come from the Homebase, Sling, When I Work and Deputy pricing pages. Methodology: list prices checked on each vendor's pricing page in October 2026, in USD before tax, with the scenario arithmetic shown.

7shifts pros and cons

What we like

  • Comp is free for one location and up to 15 employees, with no card and no expiry.
  • Pro covers up to 60 employees per location and Premium is unlimited, so a 60-person site still pays one flat Pro rate.
  • Tip Management, Labor Compliance and Manager Log Book are restaurant modules per-user schedulers lack.

What could be better

  • Essentials caps at 30 employees, so the 31st hire doubles the location price to Pro.
  • Payroll, tips, log book and tasks are each a per-location add-on, so the real bill can be two to three times the plan price.

Who 7shifts is for

Buy 7shifts for a US restaurant with 16 to 30 staff on one address, or for a group whose sites each run above 30 and fit Pro's 60-employee cap, or Premium's unlimited headcount above that. The per-location model rewards big rosters, and the tip, log book and compliance modules are the ones a general scheduler does not have.

Skip it for a site of 15 or fewer that needs a time clock, because Comp lists only basic scheduling and the step to a paid tier is the full location rate. Homebase Basic is free for one location and up to 10 people with a clock included, and Sling is free for up to 30 users for scheduling alone. Our free employee scheduling apps ranking covers that bracket.

A team that is not a restaurant should also pass. The modules are built around POS tips, front and back of house and labor laws for hourly food service. For a clinic, a retail chain or a cleaning company, Deputy or When I Work price per head and carry fewer unused modules; our Homebase vs Deputy head to head covers that choice.

The bottom line

Buy 7shifts when you run a US restaurant with 16 to 30 staff on one address, or a group whose sites each pass 30 and can use Pro. Pass when the site is small enough for Homebase Basic or Sling's free tier, or when the business is not a restaurant and the tip and compliance modules would sit unused.

Budget the add-ons before the plan. A single site on Essentials that adds payroll, tips and the log book pays several times the headline rate, and each of those lines repeats per location.

For the two closest rivals read our Homebase review and Deputy review, and for the wider category our HR software for restaurants and time clock software rankings. If payroll is the main need, start with the payroll software ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7shifts worth it in 2026?

Yes for a US restaurant with 16 to 30 staff on one location, where Essentials on annual billing costs less than Deputy, When I Work or Sling at that headcount and adds tip pooling and labor compliance. It is not worth it for a site of 15 or fewer that needs a clock, because the free Comp plan lists only basic scheduling, or for a team outside food service.

How much does 7shifts cost per month?

7shifts charges per location per month in USD: Comp is free, Essentials is $44.99 monthly or $39.99 on annual billing, Pro is $89.99 or $79.99, and Premium is $149.99 or $134.99, as read on the vendor's pages in October 2026. Payroll, tips, the log book and tasks are separate per-location add-ons.

Does 7shifts have a free plan?

Yes. The Comp plan is free for one location and up to 15 employees, with basic scheduling and one-way announcements and no card required. The 14-day trial runs on the Pro plan, and an account that does not subscribe when it ends can stay on Comp.

How much is 7shifts Payroll?

7shifts Payroll starts at $39.99 per month per location plus $6 per employee paid, and it can be added to any paid plan, with implementation and employee onboarding included. It is US only, and the vendor lists extra charges for rush pay, mailed tax forms and failed funding on top of the base rate.

7shifts or Homebase for a restaurant?

Homebase is cheaper for one site: its Essentials plan is $30 per location a month with no employee cap, against the Essentials annual rate on 7shifts with a 30-employee cap. 7shifts wins on restaurant depth, with tip pooling, labor compliance and a manager log book built for food service. A site above 30 staff that wants those modules pays Pro on 7shifts.

What is the 7shifts employee limit?

Comp allows up to 15 employees and Essentials up to 30, both per location. Pro and Premium have no employee limit, so a site that crosses 30 staff moves to Pro, which doubles the per-location rate.
