Rippling vs ADP 2026: Per-Employee Price, Payroll Depth and IT

Rippling vs ADP in 2026: Rippling starts at $8 per employee per month plus a base fee, ADP quotes every plan. Which fits a growing company, by headcount and need.

Rippling vs ADP 2026: Per-Employee Price, Payroll Depth and IT

Rippling is the better pick for a growing company that wants payroll, HR, devices and app access on one employee record: its plans start at $8 per employee per month plus a monthly base fee. ADP is the safer pick for a company that wants payroll run with a service desk behind it, and it quotes every plan, so the decision comes down to what you need around payroll, not the sticker.

Neither vendor prints a full price. Rippling publishes a starting rate and leaves the base fee to a quote; ADP's RUN and Workforce Now pages end in a "Get pricing" form with no dollar figure. Both were verified on the vendor pages on October 19, 2026, so the pricing below is as of October 2026. Our view: buy Rippling when IT and finance tools are on the roadmap, buy ADP when payroll compliance and phone support are the whole job.

Toolradar data: in the October 2026 data of Toolradar, the software directory we run, Rippling is the most compared tool in HR & Recruiting among 54 tools with 20 or more compare-page visits, and it is listed as an alternative to 70 other tools, second of 75 in Payroll. ADP is listed as an alternative to 14 tools. The records are Rippling on Toolradar and ADP on Toolradar.

What does each one cost?

Rippling prints one number: $8 per employee per month as the starting rate. Its pricing FAQ adds a monthly base fee and says the total depends on which products you choose. Payroll itself has no separate list price; Rippling asks for a quote based on headcount and products. That makes the starting rate a floor, useful for comparing quotes, never a budget on its own.

ADP prints none. The RUN packages page lists four packages, Essential, Enhanced, Complete Payroll & HR+ and HR Pro, each with a "Get pricing" button. The Workforce Now options page does the same for Select, Plus and Premium. A buyer cannot price ADP without a sales call, and our ADP pricing breakdown explains what moves those quotes.

Here is what the one published rate implies at three company sizes. These are our arithmetic on Rippling's starting rate, before the base fee, which always adds to them:

Headcount Rippling floor per month Rippling floor per year ADP product you would be quoted
25 employees $200 + base fee $2,400 + base fees RUN (built for 1 to 49)
60 employees $480 + base fee $5,760 + base fees Workforce Now (built for 50 to 999)
150 employees $1,200 + base fee $14,400 + base fees Workforce Now

The useful read of this table is the crossover at 50 people. A company that grows from 40 to 60 employees stays on the same Rippling account and pays more seats; on ADP it moves from RUN to Workforce Now, which is a different product and a new quote. Ask ADP up front what that move costs and whether data carries over.

One cost both share: add-ons. On ADP's RUN page, W-2 and 1099 form delivery carries an additional fee even on the top package. Rippling's add-on cost is the base fee and every extra module, since its pricing is per product. Get both quotes itemized line by line.

Payroll depth: where ADP leads

ADP's case rests on service and compliance, and its own pages spell out a lot of it. Every RUN package includes 24/7 customer support by phone or chat, tax filing, new-hire reporting, multi-state and multi-jurisdiction payroll, and a general ledger export to QuickBooks, Xero and Wave. ADP also states that if it makes a tax filing error, it pays the resulting fines or penalties.

The packages split on extras. Essential covers payroll and taxes; Enhanced adds garnishment payment service, State Unemployment Insurance management, job costing and labor law posters; Complete adds basic HR support; HR Pro adds enhanced HR support and employee perks. For a 30-person employer with wage garnishments or state unemployment audits, that means Essential is the wrong package to quote.

Workforce Now scales the same idea for 50 to 999 employees. Select covers payroll, HR records, onboarding and ADP Assist; Plus adds benefits administration; Premium adds time, scheduling and PTO. Recruiting, performance, compensation, an HR help desk and a learning library with over 70,000 courses are add-ons. ADP says it serves more than 1,000,000 clients and runs payroll services in more than 140 countries, a scale that reassures a buyer who weighs track record over features.

The weakness is fragmentation: RUN, Workforce Now and the TotalSource PEO are separate products, so a company that grows or changes its employment model can face a migration without ever leaving the vendor.

Payroll depth: what Rippling does differently

Rippling's payroll calculates and files federal, state and local payroll taxes automatically, per its payroll page. Before approval, it compares the current pay run with previous ones so a jump in gross pay, taxes or deductions shows up before the money moves. HR changes such as a new hire, a raise or a benefits deduction flow into payroll without re-entry, because they live on the same record.

That shared record is the real product. A raise entered in HR changes payroll; a termination cuts payroll, app access and device access in the same step. Rippling's own comparison page lists 650+ integrations, global payroll, employer of record (EOR) and contractor management. Treat its claims about ADP on that page as a competitor's view and check them against ADP's own pages.

Switching mid-year is supported. Rippling's FAQ says it can import year-to-date payroll data from the previous provider, so a move off ADP in July does not wait for January. The gap to watch is service: Rippling's pricing pages do not promise ADP's 24/7 phone line or its penalty guarantee, so ask for support hours and penalty terms in the quote.

IT and finance: the line ADP does not cross

This is where the two products stop being comparable. Rippling's device management manages Apple and Windows laptops through their lifecycle, enforces security policies based on user and device attributes, and reports on the fleet. Combined with identity and app access, a new hire can get payroll, a laptop and the right software accounts from one onboarding flow, and lose all three on the last day.

Rippling also sells a finance suite: corporate cards, expenses, bill pay, procurement, travel and banking under the same policies. ADP's RUN and Workforce Now packages include no device or identity management, so an ADP shop buys those from a separate IT vendor and keeps the two in sync by hand or by integration.

For a 25-person company with no IT person, that difference is worth more than the payroll engine. For a 150-person company that already runs a separate device management tool and an identity provider, it matters less, and ADP's service model may weigh more.

PEO: both offer one, built differently

A PEO (professional employer organization) co-employs your staff, runs payroll and benefits under its own plans, and takes on much of the compliance and workers' comp. Rippling's PEO page says you can move off the PEO and keep the same software, switching to HR services or the plain platform as you grow. ADP's PEO is TotalSource, sold and implemented as its own product. PEO pricing is quoted by both; our PEO cost guide and the best PEO services list cover what to expect.

Who should choose which

Choose Rippling if you are a startup or scale-up that hires remotely or abroad, and want IT, finance and HR on one system. Eligible US VC-backed startups get 6 months free, per Rippling's pricing FAQ. Rippling also fits teams that expect to pass 50 employees soon and do not want to change products when they do.

Choose ADP if payroll is the job and you want a long-established provider with 24/7 support and a written penalty promise. RUN suits 1 to 49 employees with garnishments, job costing or state unemployment work; Workforce Now suits 50 to 999 with a dedicated HR team that wants recruiting, learning and benefits from one payroll vendor.

Get both quotes if you sit near 50 employees. That is where ADP moves you between products and Rippling does not, and the quote difference is the decision.

How we compared

Rippling's pricing, payroll, device management and PEO facts were read on October 19, 2026 on its pricing page, payroll page, device management page, PEO page and comparison page. ADP's packages and features were read the same day on its RUN packages page and Workforce Now options page. Headcount floors are our arithmetic on Rippling's published starting rate and exclude its base fee. Toolradar figures come from its October 2026 data. This page reads vendor pages; it does not test either product. Prices and packages change, so confirm with a quote.

FAQ

Is Rippling or ADP better for a growing company in 2026?

Rippling fits a company that wants HR, payroll, IT and finance on one employee record and expects to grow past 50 people without changing products; it charges per employee plus a monthly base fee. ADP fits a company that wants payroll with 24/7 support and a tax penalty promise, but it moves you from RUN to Workforce Now at 50 employees.

How much does Rippling cost compared with ADP?

Rippling's plans start at $8 per employee per month plus a monthly base fee that it quotes, so 25 employees cost at least $200 a month before that fee. ADP publishes no price for RUN or Workforce Now; every package ends in a quote form. Compare itemized quotes, including form fees and add-on modules.

Does ADP have IT or device management like Rippling?

No. ADP's RUN and Workforce Now packages cover payroll, HR, benefits, time and talent but include no device or identity management. Rippling sells device management for Apple and Windows laptops, identity and app access on the same record as payroll, so offboarding cuts pay and access together.

Can I switch from ADP to Rippling mid-year?

Yes. Rippling says it can import year-to-date payroll data from your previous provider, so you can switch at any point in the year rather than waiting for January. Check your ADP contract for notice terms and ask Rippling to confirm the tax filing handover in writing.

Which has better customer support, Rippling or ADP?

ADP lists 24/7 phone and chat support on every RUN package and states that it pays fines from its own tax filing errors. Rippling's pricing pages do not publish support hours or a comparable penalty promise, so ask for both in the quote before you sign.

Is Rippling cheaper than ADP for startups?

For eligible US VC-backed startups, Rippling offers 6 months free, which no ADP pricing page matches. Past that, neither publishes a full price, so the cheaper option is whichever itemized quote comes in lower for the modules you actually need.
