BambooHR vs Rippling (2026): Which HRIS Is Better Value?
BambooHR vs Rippling in 2026: BambooHR Core is $10 per employee or $250 a month flat at 25 people; Rippling starts at $8 per employee plus a base fee.

Pick BambooHR when the job is people records, time off and reviews for a US team, because its rate card is public: Core is $10 per employee per month, or $250 a month flat for 25 employees or fewer. Pick Rippling when payroll, devices and app access must run from the same employee record. It starts at $8 per employee per month plus a base fee, and the rest of the bill comes on a quote.
Prices were read on 18 October 2026 on BambooHR's pricing page, BambooHR's payroll page, Rippling's pricing page, Rippling's small-business page, Rippling's payroll review, updated 17 June 2026, and its HRIS review, updated 31 August 2026. Toolradar data: the HRIS ranking, updated October 2026, evaluated 33 tools and names BambooHR its overall pick, while the payroll ranking evaluated 74 tools and names Rippling first. Each product leads the category it was built for, which is the whole shape of this decision.

An HRIS (human resources information system) is the system of record for employee data: the personnel file, time off, onboarding steps and the approvals around them. The question here is whether you want that record alone or wired into payroll and IT.
What each vendor actually prints
BambooHR prints a full seat rate card; Rippling prints one starting number. That asymmetry decides how much of the budget you can build before a sales call.
BambooHR lists three plans. Core includes 5 open job postings, time-off management and benefits tracking. Pro raises the cap to 25 openings and adds 360 review cycles and 1:1s. Elite raises it to 50 and adds an extra 30 days of implementation. Each plan has a flat monthly rate for companies with 25 employees or fewer, so a 9-person team pays the same as a 25-person team.
Rippling's pricing page says plans start at $8 per employee per month "with a monthly base fee" and leaves the base unstated. Its small-business page names a $40 monthly base fee next to the same per-user start. Its August HRIS review instead gives the HRIS module "a base fee of $35 per employee per month". Those last two figures cannot both describe the same contract, so ask the quote to name the base fee and its unit.
What a team pays at 10, 26, 50 and 100 employees
The table below is our own arithmetic on the printed rates. BambooHR's rows are HR seats only, because its payroll add-on has no public price. Rippling's rows use the HRIS start and the annual payroll rate (both $8 per employee) plus the $40 small-business base, which is the reading most favorable to Rippling.
| Headcount | BambooHR Core | BambooHR Pro | BambooHR Elite | Rippling HRIS only | Rippling HRIS + US payroll (annual) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | $250/month | $425/month | $650/month | $120/month | $200/month |
| 26 | $260/month | $442/month | $650/month | $248/month | $456/month |
| 50 | $500/month | $850/month | $1,250/month | $440/month | $840/month |
| 100 | $1,000/month | $1,700/month | $2,500/month | $840/month | $1,640/month |
At 10 people, Rippling's HR-plus-payroll floor costs less than BambooHR Core's HR seats alone. The flat floor is the reason: a 10-person team on Core pays $25 per head in practice. That is also the case for a small BambooHR buyer to negotiate, since the floor never shrinks below 25 seats.
Read the 26-person row as the edge of the flat rate. One hire past 25 moves Core and Pro onto per-employee billing, while Elite lands on the same $650, so a team that grows by one person sees Pro rise and Elite stay put.
At 100 employees, BambooHR's volume discount matters. The pricing FAQ says discounts apply automatically and grow with headcount, but the schedule is not published, so those rows are ceilings. Rippling's rows are floors: its HRIS review estimates roughly $15 to $25 per employee per month for 100 people on HRIS, payroll, benefits administration and time tracking, and $30 to $50 or more with global payroll, IT and spend management.
If the $35 per employee base in the HRIS review were applied literally, Rippling's HRIS-only row at 10 people would be $430 a month, above BambooHR Core. That is why the base fee is the first line to get in writing.
Payroll: the line BambooHR will not price
Rippling wins on payroll transparency, because it publishes a rate and BambooHR does not. BambooHR sells Payroll, Benefits Administration, Time and Attendance and Global Employment as add-ons with no dollar amounts on the pricing page. The only number attached to them is a 15% discount when you combine Payroll and Benefits Administration, for US employees.
BambooHR Payroll is built for US employees. Its payroll page covers federal, state and local tax filing, W-2s and direct deposit, syncs with QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite and Sage Intacct, and offers a managed option run by a specialist. Staff outside the US go through local integrations, global payroll partners or an employer of record. On the pricing page, Global Employment is listed as powered by Remote.
Rippling's payroll review lists the two domestic payroll rates shown in the table above, with payroll in 185+ countries. Off-cycle runs are free where Rippling runs payroll natively and carry a $50 per employee, per run fee in some partner jurisdictions. A finance lead who runs frequent bonus or correction runs abroad should map which countries are native before signing.
Rippling's small-business page also says multi-state US payroll comes at no extra cost across all 50 states. For a remote team spread across states, that removes one variable from the quote.
Records, hiring and reviews
BambooHR wins for an HR team whose work is the people file and the review cycle. Its tiers are cut around HR jobs: Core covers records, time off and a short hiring list, Pro adds performance, Elite adds compensation tools and more implementation help. You can see which plan fits before talking to anyone.
The job cap is the hidden tier trigger. Six open roles at once push a BambooHR customer from Core to Pro, a $7 per employee step at list price, even if the team has no use for 360 reviews. A company with steady hiring volume should compare that step with a separate applicant tracking system.
The AI assistant is tiered too. Core answers questions from HR data, Pro adds answers from company policies and documents, and Elite adds benchmark questions and analysis. If the goal is to stop answering handbook questions by hand, that is a Pro feature at minimum.
Rippling publishes no tier map, so a buyer cannot see which talent features sit in the starting price. Its own HRIS review concedes that BambooHR is "better for HR teams that prioritize culture, performance management, and applicant tracking", which is a notable admission on a vendor's own blog. Ask for the performance and recruiting modules as separate quote lines.
Devices, apps and the first day
Rippling wins when HR and IT are the same person. Its small-business page says onboarding sends offer letters, prompts benefits enrollment, ships laptops and grants app access by role. BambooHR has no native device or identity product, so a new hire's laptop and accounts stay with a separate IT tool.
Integration breadth is Rippling's other argument. Its comparison page claims 650+ integrations against about 150 for BambooHR. That figure comes from Rippling's own competitive page, not a neutral count, so check the specific apps your stack needs on both marketplaces.
The cost of that reach is complexity, and it lands on the invoice. Every device, identity or finance module is another priced line, and Rippling's own estimate climbs to $30 to $50 or more per employee once global payroll and IT are in. A 40-person company that only needs records and time off pays for wiring it will not use.
Contracts, trials and discounts
BambooHR offers month-to-month terms or a longer term for price certainty, takes cards and ACH for monthly billing, and gives registered nonprofits an extra 15% off. Its pricing page lists no free plan and no free trial, only a demo request.
Rippling's payroll review shows a $2 per employee premium for monthly billing over annual. Its pricing page offers eligible US VC-backed startups 6 months of free access, the only free route on either side. A funded startup under that program can run Rippling for half a year before the first invoice, which changes the first-year math more than any per-seat gap.
Who should choose which
Choose BambooHR if you have more than 25 US employees, an HR lead who owns records, reviews and time off, and payroll that already works elsewhere or can wait for a quote. The public rate card lets you budget the HR side in an afternoon.
Choose Rippling if one admin runs HR, payroll and IT, if staff work in several states or countries, or if you qualify for the startup program. For a team small enough to sit under BambooHR's flat rate, Rippling's published floor for HR plus payroll costs less than BambooHR's HR seats alone, so the small company gets payroll included for less.
Choose neither yet if you need a fixed total before a sales call: BambooHR hides the payroll price and Rippling hides the base fee. If cost is the main filter, see cheaper Rippling alternatives and the BambooHR alternatives.

Questions to put in each quote
For BambooHR:
- What does Payroll cost per employee and per month, and does the 15% bundle discount apply with Benefits Administration?
- At my headcount, what volume discount applies to the plan rate?
- If we pass 25 employees mid-term, when does the flat rate switch to per-employee billing?
For Rippling:
- Is the base fee $40 per month for the account or $35 per employee per month, and which modules carry one?
- Itemize HRIS, payroll, benefits, time tracking and device management as separate monthly lines.
- Which of our countries run native payroll, and which carry the $50 off-cycle fee?
Methodology
We read each vendor's pricing page and the Rippling pages linked above on 18 October 2026, and priced four headcounts from the printed rates only. No discount, promotion or estimate enters the cost table; Rippling's own estimates are labeled as such. We do not run these products in a lab; the comparison rests on what each vendor publishes. FAQ
Is BambooHR or Rippling cheaper in 2026?
Under 25 employees, Rippling's published floor is lower: HRIS plus annual US payroll comes to $200 a month at 10 people, against $250 a month for BambooHR Core's HR seats alone. Once the flat rate ends, BambooHR Core per employee sits close to Rippling HRIS, but BambooHR's payroll add-on has no public price, so neither total is final until both quotes arrive.
Does BambooHR include payroll?
No. Payroll is an add-on for US employees with no price on BambooHR's pricing page, alongside Benefits Administration, Time and Attendance and Global Employment. Combining Payroll and Benefits Administration earns a 15% discount.
What is Rippling's base fee?
Rippling's pricing page mentions a monthly base fee without a number. Its small-business page names $40 per month, and its August 2026 HRIS review writes $35 per employee per month. Ask the quote to state the amount and whether it is per account or per employee.
Is there a free trial for BambooHR or Rippling?
BambooHR's pricing page lists no free plan or trial, only a demo. Rippling has no general free plan, but its pricing page offers eligible US VC-backed startups 6 months of free access.
Which is better for performance reviews?
BambooHR, for a team that wants a visible price for it: Pro at $17 per employee per month adds 360 review cycles and 1:1s. Rippling's own HRIS review says BambooHR is better for teams that prioritize performance management and applicant tracking, and Rippling prices its talent modules on a quote.
Can BambooHR run payroll outside the US?
Not natively. BambooHR Payroll is built for US employees, and staff abroad run through partner integrations or the Global Employment add-on powered by Remote. Rippling says it runs payroll in 185+ countries.
