TL;DR

Sling is worth it in 2026 for a shift team of up to 30 people that mainly needs a shared schedule: that part is free. Once you need a time clock, Premium is $2 per user per month and Business is $4 on monthly billing, or $1.70 and $3.40 when billed annually, read on Sling's pricing page on 19 October 2026.

The weak spot is scale at one site. Sling charges every paid user, while Homebase charges a flat fee per location, so a single-site team past about 15 people pays less for a time clock elsewhere. Sling now carries the Toast name, and Toast customers view their plans in the Toast Shop.

Sling is the scheduler small hourly teams pick when they want the rota out of a group chat without paying for it. The free plan is the reason it shows up on so many shortlists, and the per-user upgrade is the reason some teams leave it once they grow.

This review covers what each plan includes, what a 12, 25 and 45 person team pays each month, and how that compares with Homebase, Connecteam, When I Work and Deputy, with every price read on the vendor's own pricing page on 19 October 2026.

Toolradar data: Sling is listed as an alternative to 8 other tools on Toolradar, the software directory we run, against a median of 5 for the 39 internal communication tools it is grouped with, as of October 2026. Buyers cross-shop it often, which fits a free product that teams try before they compare.

How we reviewed it: we read Sling's plan and feature tables, its billing FAQ and the competitors' pricing pages, then priced three team sizes on list rates. Dupple has no test lab, so this page reports what the vendors publish, not hands-on results.

What is Sling?

Sling is employee scheduling, team messaging and time tracking for hourly businesses such as restaurants, shops, clinics and call centers. It runs on the web, iOS and Android, so managers build the schedule at a desk and staff check shifts on their phones.

Sling now trades as Sling by Toast, under the restaurant point-of-sale brand. Toast customers are sent to the Toast Shop to view their plans, so a restaurant already on Toast should check that listing before it signs up on the public page.

It is not payroll and not an HR system. Business adds payroll reports that aggregate hours for processing, but the pay run itself still happens in your payroll provider, and there is no employee record beyond documents and time off.

How Sling works

You create a company account, add employees by hand or import them from a file, and each person accepts an invite by email or SMS. The free plan starts immediately, and Premium or Business start with a 15-day free trial.

At the end of the trial you pick a plan and choose monthly or annual billing, and annual saves 15%. An existing customer can switch to annual from the billing page, so a team can start monthly and lock in the lower rate once the tool has stuck.

Billing follows active users. When an employee leaves and you deactivate or remove them, Sling prorates the unused time, and a replacement hire is added to the bill automatically. That makes Sling cheaper than tools with a monthly minimum for a team with high turnover.

Sling key features

A free plan for up to 30 usersEssential
Shift scheduling, shift templates, open shifts, shift offers between coworkers, time-off requests, announcements and private messages are free. Few schedulers give that much to a team of 30, which is why many small businesses never upgrade.
Mobile time clock on PremiumEssential
Premium adds mobile clock-in, timesheets with approvals and edit history, geofencing, auto clock-out and early clock-in prevention. This is the plan a team needs once hours feed payroll.
Labor cost controls
Premium also adds labor cost management against sales, budgeting, overtime tracking, mandatory breaks and clopening rules for required rest between shifts. Those features help a manager keep a schedule inside a wage budget before the week starts.
Attendance and payroll reports on Business
Business adds kiosk clock-in on a shared device, attendance reports, no-show, sick call-out and late arrival tracking, payroll reports, PTO management, holiday pay and auto-assigning. It suits a manager who closes payroll from Sling's numbers.
Tasks attached to shifts
Business includes task templates and shift tasks, so an opening or closing checklist travels with the shift. Teams that run checklists on paper can drop that step.

Sling pricing

Prices below were read on Sling's pricing page on 19 October 2026, in USD. Sling prints a monthly rate and an annual-billing rate per user per month, and it does not print a yearly total, so the scenarios are monthly bills. The number that matters most is headcount at one site, because Sling charges per user and some rivals charge per location.

On monthly billing, a 12-person team pays $24 a month on Premium and $48 on Business. A 25-person team pays $50 and $100, and a 45-person team pays $90 and $180. Annual billing cuts each of those by 15%, so the 25-person team on Premium pays $42.50 a month.

Per-location pricing changes the order as teams grow. Homebase Essentials is $30 per location per month billed monthly with unlimited employees, so it matches Sling Premium at 15 users and wins above that at one site. Connecteam Operations Basic is $35 a month for the first 30 users on monthly billing, plus $1 for each extra user, so a 45-person team pays $50 against Sling's $90.

Small teams are where Sling wins. At 12 users Premium costs less than either flat-fee rival, and the free plan covers the whole team if nobody needs to clock in. Connecteam's free plan stops at 10 users and Homebase's free Basic plan at one location with up to 10 employees.

Sling pros and cons

What we like

  • The free plan covers up to 30 users with scheduling, open shifts, time-off requests and private messages.
  • Premium adds a geofenced mobile time clock and labor cost tracking at a per-person rate below When I Work's entry plan.
  • Departing employees are prorated, so high-turnover teams pay only for active users.

What could be better

  • Availability and shift swaps are paid features, so a free team schedules around availability kept elsewhere.
  • Per-user billing costs more than Homebase's flat location fee once one site passes about 15 paid users.

Who Sling is for

Sling fits a single-site shift business small enough for the free plan's user cap that needs a schedule everyone can see and a way to message the team. A cafe, salon, small retail store or front desk can run on the free plan for as long as nobody clocks in through the app.

Choose Premium when hours have to be tracked, which for most teams means the moment payroll depends on the schedule. Choose Business when the manager also tracks attendance, PTO and holiday pay, or wants kiosk clock-in at the door.

Look elsewhere if one location has more than about 15 staff who all need a time clock, because Homebase's flat location fee is lower there. Look elsewhere too if you want payroll inside the same product: Homebase and Deputy sell payroll add-ons, while Sling stops at payroll reports.

The bottom line

Sling is the easy recommendation for a small shift team: run the schedule free while the team fits under the free plan's cap, and pay a few dollars per person only when hours need tracking. Premium is the plan most teams end up on, and Business earns its higher rate when attendance and PTO move into the tool.

Pass on it when one location grows past about 15 clocked-in staff, since Homebase's flat fee is lower, or when payroll has to sit in the same app. The free employee scheduling apps list and the shift scheduling software ranking put Sling next to the alternatives, and the Homebase review, Connecteam review, When I Work review and Deputy review cover each rival in depth. Restaurants should also read the restaurant HR software guide, and teams that only need clock-in can start with the time clock software list.

Methodology: prices and features were read on Sling's pricing page, Homebase pricing, Connecteam pricing, When I Work pricing and Deputy pricing on 19 October 2026. Monthly bills multiply the printed per-user or flat rates by headcount, with no discounts or taxes. The Toolradar profile holds the directory data quoted above, next to the Homebase and Connecteam profiles.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sling worth it in 2026?

Yes for a shift team of up to 30 users that mainly needs a shared schedule and messaging, because that is free. Once hours must be tracked, Premium is the cheapest paid step, priced per user and read on Sling's pricing page on 19 October 2026. A single site with more than about 15 clocked-in staff usually pays less with a per-location tool such as Homebase.

Is Sling really free?

Sling's free plan is free for up to 30 users and covers shift scheduling, templates, open shifts, shift offers, time-off requests, the news feed and private messages. It has no time clock, no availability and no shift swaps, which are paid features. A team that needs any of those moves to Premium or Business, each with a 15-day trial.

How much does Sling cost per month?

Premium is $2 per user per month and Business is $4 on monthly billing; annual billing takes 15% off, to $1.70 and $3.40. A 25-person team pays $50 a month on Premium and $100 on Business at monthly rates. Sling prorates the bill when an employee leaves.

What is the difference between Sling Premium and Business?

Premium adds time tracking: a mobile time clock, timesheets, geofencing, overtime and labor cost tracking, availability and shift swaps. Business adds kiosk clock-in, attendance reports, payroll reports, PTO management, holiday pay, auto-assigning and shift tasks, at twice the Premium rate.

Is Sling cheaper than Homebase?

For small teams, yes. Sling Premium costs $24 a month for 12 users on monthly billing, against the single flat location fee of Homebase Essentials. The two match at 15 users, and above that a single site pays less on Homebase because its fee covers unlimited employees. With several small locations, Sling's per-user billing can come out ahead again.
