BambooHR Review
A friendly, easy-to-run HRIS built for small and mid-size US teams. Genuinely simple to adopt, with performance and payroll sitting in higher tiers and paid add-ons.
BambooHR is an easy-to-use HRIS for small and mid-size companies, roughly 25 to 1,000 employees, especially US-based teams that want core HR, PTO, onboarding, and hiring without heavy configuration. Pricing is now published and charged per employee per month: Core is $10, Pro is $17, and Elite is $25, with a flat minimum of $250 a month for teams of 25 or fewer. Its biggest strength is simplicity: fast setup, a clean employee database, and reporting that non-technical HR teams actually use. The biggest catch is the add-ons: payroll, benefits, and time tracking cost extra, are quoted separately, and payroll and benefits are US-only. The closest alternatives are HiBob, Rippling, Namely, and Personio.

BambooHR is one of the first HR platforms most small companies look at when they outgrow spreadsheets and a shared drive. It has been around since 2008, sits in the same category as HiBob, Rippling, and Personio, and has built its reputation on one thing above all: being genuinely easy to use.
For an HR team of one or two people who do not want a six month rollout, that reputation is the whole pitch.
This review is written for HR and people ops leaders evaluating BambooHR for a 25 to 1,000 person company, most often in the United States.
We cover what the Core, Pro, and Elite plans include, what the payroll, benefits, and time tracking add-ons cost, what it realistically runs per employee, how it feels to set up and use day to day, where it is genuinely strong, and where it falls short against more configurable or more global tools. We also cover who should skip it, and four alternatives worth a demo before you sign.
What is BambooHR?
BambooHR is a cloud HR platform, or HRIS, made by BambooHR, a company founded in 2008 and headquartered in Lindon, Utah. It serves more than 30,000 businesses across 150+ countries, though its product and its payroll are built first for the United States market.
At the center is the employee database, the single system of record.
Around it BambooHR bundles the tools most SMB HR teams need: hiring and applicant tracking (an ATS), onboarding and offboarding, time off management (PTO), an employee directory and org chart, e-signature for documents, standard and custom reporting, a well-reviewed mobile app, and workflows with approvals.
Higher tiers add performance management (360 reviews, 1-on-1s, and goals), employee community and recognition, employee satisfaction surveys (eNPS), and compensation management with advanced dashboards.
On top of the plans sit four paid add-ons: Payroll (US direct deposit and automatic tax filing), Benefits Administration (open enrollment and carrier connections), Time and Attendance (scheduling and overtime), and Global Employment powered by Remote for hiring contractors and employees abroad.
A newer Bamboo AI layer answers HR questions and automates routine work. Tying it all together is a large integration marketplace with more than 150 connectors.
How BambooHR works
Setup is the part BambooHR is known for. Implementation is fast by HRIS standards, often measured in weeks rather than months. You import employee data, set up your PTO policies and approval chains, and configure onboarding checklists that trigger tasks, documents, and welcome emails before a new hire's first day.
Most teams get productive without a dedicated admin or an outside consultant, which is the main reason small companies pick it in the first place.
Day to day, employees mostly touch the mobile app and their own profile. They request time off, browse the org chart and directory, sign documents, and complete onboarding tasks. Managers approve requests and run review cycles if you are on Pro or above.
HR admins live in the reports, workflows, and settings, where the reporting is a real highlight: building a custom report takes minutes, not a data team.
Integrations connect through the marketplace, with named connectors for Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Indeed, Greenhouse, Checkr, QuickBooks, and Okta, among more than 150 others. The rough edges show up when you push past the basics.
Deeper configuration, complex approval logic, and multi-entity or multi-country structures are where BambooHR feels thin, and some capabilities you might expect in the base tier (performance, advanced dashboards, and compensation) sit behind Pro or Elite.
BambooHR key features
BambooHR pricing
Unlike many HR platforms, BambooHR now publishes its core pricing, which is a welcome change from the years it kept every number behind a sales call. Plans are charged per employee per month, with automatic volume discounts as headcount grows.
There are three tiers. Core is $10 per employee per month and covers the essentials: employee records, PTO, hiring and onboarding, workflows, standard and custom reporting, and the mobile app.
Pro is $17 per employee per month and adds performance management (360 reviews and 1-on-1s), employee community and recognition, and employee satisfaction surveys. Elite is $25 per employee per month and layers on compensation management, advanced dashboards, HR benchmarks, and premium support.
For very small teams, there is a flat rate starting at $250 a month for 25 employees or fewer.
The add-ons are where the transparency stops. Payroll, Benefits Administration, and Time and Attendance are each priced separately and quoted per situation, and Global Employment runs through a Remote partnership.
BambooHR offers a 15% discount when you combine Payroll and Benefits Administration (US employees only).
Third-party purchase data from Vendr puts a typical BambooHR contract near $16,000 a year, with a range from roughly $9,500 to $79,000 and one-time implementation fees of about $2,000 to $10,000 for larger migrations.
There is no ongoing free plan, though BambooHR has historically offered a free trial and always offers a live demo.
The practical advice: budget for the tier that unlocks the features you actually need, add the cost of payroll and benefits on top, and negotiate a multi-year rate if you expect to grow, since Vendr notes multi-year deals run 10% to 20% cheaper per employee.

- Very easy to set up and use, with a short learning curve and a strong mobile app.
- Excellent core HR, PTO, onboarding, and custom reporting for non-technical teams.
- Now publishes per-employee pricing, backed by a 150+ integration marketplace.
What could be better

- Performance management and advanced dashboards require the Pro or Elite tier.
Who BambooHR is for
BambooHR is a strong fit for small and mid-size companies, roughly 25 to 1,000 employees, that are US-based and want a friendly, low-maintenance HRIS.
If your HR team is one or two people, you value fast setup over deep configuration, and you want core HR, PTO, hiring, and onboarding in one place that employees will not complain about, it is one of the safest picks in the category. The reporting and the mobile app are genuine reasons to choose it over cheaper tools.
It is a weaker fit in a few clear cases. Large enterprises and complex organizations with multiple entities, unions, or intricate approval hierarchies will hit its ceiling. Global-first companies that need native payroll in many countries are better served by Rippling or Deel, since BambooHR's payroll and benefits are US-only.
Teams that want a culture-first, engagement-heavy platform will find HiBob richer, and European companies with local compliance needs will usually prefer Personio. And if you need performance management or advanced dashboards, remember those live on the Pro and Elite tiers, not Core.
Best BambooHR alternatives
If BambooHR is not the right fit, these are the closest options.

The bottom line
BambooHR earns its popularity honestly. For a 25 to 1,000 person US company that wants a clean, easy HRIS without a long rollout, it is one of the most sensible choices on the market.
Core HR, PTO, hiring, onboarding, and reporting are all solid, the mobile app is good, and the recent move to published per-employee pricing makes it easier to budget than most rivals.
The trade-offs are real: payroll, benefits, and time tracking cost extra and are quoted separately, payroll and benefits are US-only, performance and advanced reporting sit behind higher tiers, and the platform gets thin for large or global organizations.
Buy BambooHR if simplicity and US core HR are your priorities. If you want a richer culture layer, look at HiBob; if you need HR, IT, and global payroll unified, look at Rippling; if you want a mid-market platform with more managed services, compare Namely; and if you are Europe-based, Personio is the stronger fit.
