Checkr vs HireRight (2026): Background Check Pricing and Turnaround
Checkr vs HireRight in 2026: Checkr prints $29.99 to $94.99 per report, HireRight sells by quote. Package contents, add-ons, turnaround claims and who fits which.

Checkr wins for most US employers that want to know the price before they sign: its Essential package costs $59.99 per report with unlimited county criminal searches, and you can sign up online. HireRight wins for large, global or regulated employers, with 200+ countries and territories covered, drug testing and Form I-9 services, but it publishes no price at all, so every figure comes from a quote.
That split shapes everything below. Checkr prints package prices and every major add-on on its pricing page, read on 17 October 2026. HireRight's pricing page offers "a Customized Pricing Quote" and nothing else, and its homepage carries the scale figures quoted here. We did not run checks through either service for this page; every feature and figure below is what the vendor prints.
Toolradar data: in the 220-tool compliance category of Toolradar, the software directory we run, HireRight is listed as an alternative to 5 tools and Checkr to 4, against a category median of 2 (October 2026). Buyers cross-shop the two more than most screening vendors, which is why this comparison exists. See the Checkr and HireRight pages for the full data.

How much does Checkr cost compared with HireRight?
Checkr's three workforce packages are flat prices per report, and pass-through fees from courts and databases come on top. Basic, at $29.99, covers an SSN trace, the sex offender registry, a global watchlist search and a national criminal search. Essential adds identity verification and unlimited county criminal searches. Complete, at $94.99, adds unlimited state criminal searches and a federal criminal search.
The county search is the line that matters. A national database search is a pointer, and county court records are where most employers confirm a hit, so Essential is the package most small employers end up on. Checkr calls it its most popular plan. Bought separately, a county search costs $25 per check, which is why unlimited counties in Essential is worth more than the $30 gap from Basic for anyone who has lived in several places.
HireRight publishes nothing comparable. Its pricing page describes "flexible, customizable background screening solutions" designed around industry, regulatory and budget needs. That is normal for enterprise screening, but it means a small business cannot compare HireRight's per-report cost without a sales call. Our background check cost guide lists the other vendors that do publish prices.
Checkr add-ons that change the bill
| Add-on | Checkr price | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|

| Continuous MVR | $2.50 per enrolled driver per month | Fleets and delivery teams |
| Identity verification | $4.99 per check | Remote hires (already in Essential and Complete) |
| Employment verification | From $12.50 (current employer) to $50 (10 years) | Roles where work history matters |
| FACIS healthcare search | $6 (Level 1) or $15.50 (Level 3) | Healthcare employers (HR software for healthcare) |
| Federal criminal search | $10 per check | Finance and regulated roles on Basic or Essential |
| Global watchlist search | $9 per check | Included in every package |
| Continuous criminal search | $1.70 per individual per month | Employers that monitor after hire |
| Drug screening | From $10 per test | Safety-sensitive roles |

What a hiring year costs: our 50-hire scenario
Take an employer making 50 hires a year in the US. On Checkr Essential, the package fees come to $2,999.50 before pass-through fees. Add employment verification for the last 3 years at $15 a candidate, and the year reaches $3,749.50. If 20 of those hires drive, MVRs add $190 plus state fees.
Dropping to Basic halves the package bill to $1,499.50, but each county search you then add costs $25. Basic plus one county still comes in under Essential, while a second county pushes it past, so Essential wins once candidates average more than about 1.2 counties each, which is common for anyone who has moved. Moving everyone to Complete costs $4,749.50 and makes sense only when state and federal searches are a requirement for every role.
HireRight can only be compared on a quote. Send it the same scenario: 50 US hires, the searches you need per role, the share of drivers and any drug panel. Ask for per-report pricing, pass-through fees and any annual minimum in writing, then lay the figures beside the Checkr line above.
Turnaround: what each vendor actually claims
Neither vendor publishes an average turnaround time for a standard employment check, so be careful with any page that quotes one. Checkr's pricing page says "97% of customers say our turnaround times are faster than the competition," which is a customer survey result, not a measured time. Its homepage quotes a customer that went from 7 to 10 days down to "a day or less", which is one customer's account.
HireRight's pricing page lists "Fast and Streamlined Results" as a reason to choose it, with no figure attached. In practice, turnaround depends on the searches you order more than on the vendor: a county court that requires a clerk to pull a file takes longer than a database search, whoever submits it. Ask both vendors for their median time by search type for your top hiring states.
Where HireRight is the stronger choice
HireRight's case rests on breadth and regulated programs rather than price. Its homepage lists 85M+ people screened annually, "~50% of the Fortune 100" as customers, 200+ countries and territories and 70+ ATS and HCM integrations. Its service list includes global criminal searches, global employment verification, a global ID check and extended workforce screening for contractors, which suits a company running a contractor management platform or hiring abroad through an employer of record.
Two services stand out for specific buyers. HireRight offers Form I-9 and E-Verify management, which lets a large employer keep eligibility checks with its screening vendor; our I-9 and E-Verify software guide covers the standalone alternatives. It also lists instant and lab-based drug and alcohol testing, driving background services and a healthcare statewide criminal check, which matter to transport and healthcare employers with audit requirements.
Where Checkr is the stronger choice
Checkr's advantage is that a buyer can price and start screening the same day. The packages are flat, the add-ons are listed one by one, and pass-through fees are named on the page. It also prints 200+ pre-built integrations, and its Enterprise tier adds automated adjudication and customized workflows.
Adjudication tools are priced too. Assess Lite is included and, according to Checkr, reduces manual record review by up to 40%. Assess Standard costs $2.49 per report and Assess Premium $4 per report, with filtering across up to 235 criminal record categories. For a high-volume hourly employer, that line can matter more than the package price, since manual review is where recruiter time goes. Teams already using AI recruiting tools to screen applicants will recognize the same trade: pay a little per report to save hours of review.
Who should pick which
- Pick Checkr if you hire in the US, want a price today and can run checks yourself. Essential at $59.99 covers most hourly and office roles.
- Pick HireRight if you hire across borders, run drug testing programs, or want I-9 and screening from one vendor, and you are large enough that a negotiated quote is normal.
- Get both quotes if you hire more than a few hundred people a year: at that volume, Checkr's Enterprise pricing is also negotiated, so the published list price is a ceiling, not the deal.
For the wider field, our best background check services ranking compares Checkr with GoodHire, Certn, Sterling and Accurate, and the GoodHire review covers the closest priced alternative. If screening is part of a bigger hiring rebuild, the applicant tracking systems ranking shows which ATS tools connect to both, and the HR compliance software guide covers the rest of the compliance stack.
FAQ
Is Checkr cheaper than HireRight?
Checkr publishes its prices and HireRight does not, so no page can prove one is cheaper. Checkr's packages cost $29.99, $59.99 and $94.99 per report, checked on 17 October 2026, plus pass-through fees. HireRight sells by custom quote. Send both the same hiring scenario and compare the written quotes.
How long does a Checkr background check take compared with HireRight?
Neither vendor publishes an average turnaround for a standard check. Checkr says 97% of its customers report faster turnaround than their previous vendor, a survey claim. HireRight lists fast results without a figure. Turnaround depends mostly on the searches ordered, since county court searches take longer than database searches.
Does HireRight do E-Verify?
Yes. HireRight lists a US employment eligibility verification service covering Form I-9 and E-Verify, though the federal check itself is free, as our E-Verify cost explainer shows. Checkr's pricing page does not list an I-9 or E-Verify product, so a Checkr customer needs a separate tool for eligibility checks.
Which is better for a small business?
Checkr, for most small businesses, because you can sign up online and see the price per report before ordering. Its Essential package includes unlimited county criminal searches. HireRight's quote-only model and enterprise focus suit larger employers better.
Which covers more countries?
Both print a 200+ figure: Checkr says 200+ countries and HireRight says 200+ countries and territories. HireRight lists more global services by name, including a global ID check, global criminal search and global employment verification.
Which integrates with more ATS and HR systems?
Checkr prints 200+ pre-built integrations, and HireRight prints 70+ ATS and HCM integrations. Both counts are vendor claims, so check that your own ATS is on each list before choosing on this point.
