BambooHR vs Gusto 2026: HRIS or Payroll First?

BambooHR vs Gusto in 2026: BambooHR lists $10 per employee for HR with payroll as an unpriced add-on, Gusto $49 plus $6 per person for payroll. Which to buy first.

BambooHR vs Gusto 2026: HRIS or Payroll First?

Buy Gusto if the job you need done this quarter is paying people; buy BambooHR if it is keeping the employee record straight. Gusto lists full-service payroll at $49 a month plus $6 per person on Simple, and HR features ride on top of it. BambooHR lists its HR platform at $10 per employee per month on Core, and payroll is an add-on with no published price, so the BambooHR bill is only half visible from its website.

BambooHR's plan prices were read on BambooHR's pricing page on 17 October 2026, and Gusto's on its Simple, Plus and Premium plan pages the same day, with add-on fees from Gusto's pricing page. Toolradar data: on Toolradar, the software directory we run, BambooHR is the most-listed alternative of the 33 tools in the HRIS ranking, updated 15 October 2026, while Gusto sits in the payroll ranking of 74 tools, where its $49 entry plan ranks joint 23rd of the 29 payroll tools with a verified entry price against a median of $25 a month. The two products are leaders of two different categories, which is the whole comparison in one line.

An HRIS is the system that holds the employee file: start date, manager, pay rate, time off balance, signed documents and the approvals around them. A payroll platform calculates wages, files taxes and moves money. BambooHR is the first kind with the second bolted on; Gusto is the second kind with a thinner version of the first included. Pick the one whose core job matches your pain.

What 10, 25 and 50 people cost

The arithmetic below multiplies each vendor's list rates by headcount, billed monthly, US employees in one state, no benefits, before any BambooHR volume discount. It is our calculation on the vendors' published numbers, not a quote. The BambooHR column is HR only, because BambooHR publishes no payroll price; the Gusto column already includes payroll.

Headcount BambooHR Core (HR only) BambooHR Pro (HR only) Gusto Simple (payroll) Gusto Plus (payroll plus time and HR)
10 people $250 flat $425 flat $109 $200
25 people $250 $425 $199 $380
50 people $500 $850 $349 $680
100 people $1,000 $1,700 $649 $1,280

The flat fee is the number small teams miss. A 10-person company on BambooHR Core pays the same flat fee as a 25-person company, which works out at $25 a head against $10 at the headline rate. Gusto's base plus per-person model scales down better: the same 10 people cost $109 on Simple, and that figure already covers payroll and tax filing. Under 25 employees, Gusto Simple costs less than half of BambooHR Core and does more of the payday work.

The gap closes with headcount. At 50 people, Core costs $500 and Gusto Plus costs $680, and at 100 people the HRIS costs $1,000 against $1,280 for Gusto Plus. BambooHR also applies an automatic volume discount it does not publish, so a quote at 100 employees should land under the card total. What the table cannot show is the BambooHR payroll add-on, which is the line every BambooHR-first buyer has to request before the two bills are comparable.

Where each one wins

Payroll: Gusto wins on price, states and visibility

Every Gusto plan includes unlimited payroll runs, direct deposit or printed checks, federal, state and local tax filing and payment, payroll approvals and the employee app. Gusto's payroll page says it runs payroll in all 50 states at the same price whether you pay people in one state or all of them, and that off-cycle payrolls never cost extra. Time tracking, workforce cost reports and contractor invoice upload start on Plus; same-day pay, instant pay and custom admin roles are Premium features.

BambooHR Payroll is a separate purchase on top of any plan, built for US-based employees, with federal, state and local filing, W-2 creation, direct deposit, multi-rate pay, garnishments and an audit trail. It also carries no public price. BambooHR's only published payroll number is a 15% discount when you buy Payroll and Benefits Administration together with a plan. A buyer who needs a total cost of ownership from the website gets one from Gusto and a Get Quote button from BambooHR, and that asymmetry alone decides the question for many founders. The full plan-by-plan breakdown is in our BambooHR pricing guide.

HR depth: BambooHR wins on records, reviews and compensation

BambooHR Core ships the employee database, custom report builder, dashboards, onboarding packets with e-signature, unlimited custom time-off policies, eNPS surveys, one compliance course and a hiring module capped at 5 open jobs. Pro lifts hiring to 25 open jobs and adds 360 reviews, 1:1 meetings, goal tracking and 15 compliance courses for $17 per employee. Elite, at $25, adds compensation planning with salary benchmarking and levels and bands, 50 open jobs and a library of more than 300 compliance courses.

Gusto's HR layer covers onboarding checklists, document storage and e-signature, public job posts with offer letters, performance review templates with goal tracking, and anonymous feedback surveys. That is enough for a company whose HR work is hire, onboard, pay and review. It is not an HRIS with a reporting engine, compensation cycles or a hiring pipeline sized for dozens of open roles, and Gusto does not pretend otherwise: its HR page frames the product as payroll, benefits, hiring and onboarding for teams without an HR department. Our BambooHR review and Gusto review go through each product in depth.

Time tracking: Gusto includes it on Plus, BambooHR sells it separately

Gusto's time tools page states that time tracking, project tracking and time-off syncing are included on the Plus and Premium plans, with scheduling that builds shifts around availability. BambooHR's Time and Attendance add-on covers shift scheduling, break tracking and overtime calculation, and like the other three add-ons it has no published price. For an hourly workforce the comparison is Gusto Plus at $80 plus $12 against BambooHR Core plus two unpriced add-ons, and only one of those sums can be written down today.

Benefits: Gusto publishes the fine print

Gusto charges no administration fee when it acts as your health insurance broker, and $6 a month per eligible employee if you keep your own broker. One $200 annual service charge covers HSAs, FSAs, dependent care FSAs and commuter benefits. BambooHR's Benefits Administration add-on handles open enrollment, election approval and carrier connections, is marked for US employees only, and is quoted. Neither is a benefits bargain for a company that already has a broker, but Gusto's page lets you budget the integration fee before you call.

Support: BambooHR publishes nothing, Gusto publishes a surcharge

Gusto's Simple and Plus plans come with basic support by phone and chat in business hours, and prioritized access costs $30 a month plus $3 per person as the Priority Support add-on. Premium includes a dedicated account partner at $180 a month plus $22 per person. BambooHR's pricing page says nothing about support tiers, so there is no number to compare, which cuts both ways: no surcharge is listed, and no service level is promised either.

Should you run BambooHR and Gusto together?

Yes, if you want BambooHR's record and Gusto's payroll and you accept paying twice. BambooHR lists more than 150 integration partners, and Gusto's pricing FAQ names Homebase, QuickBooks, Xero and Expensify among its integrations, so a two-vendor stack is common rather than exotic. The price is the problem: at 10 people, BambooHR Core plus Gusto Simple at $109 comes to $359 a month, more than triple Gusto Simple alone. At 50 people the same pair costs $849, against $680 for Gusto Plus with its HR tools included.

The two-vendor stack earns its keep when the HRIS is doing work Gusto cannot: 360 review cycles for a 60-person company, compensation bands for a leadership team, a hiring pipeline with 20 open roles. Below that, the honest reading of both pricing pages is that one vendor is enough, and which one depends on the next section. If you expect to replace one half later, the BambooHR alternatives guide and the cheaper Gusto alternatives guide list the candidates.

Who should pick which

Pick Gusto if you have fewer than 25 employees, if payroll is the purchase and HR is a bonus, or if you pay hourly staff and want the time clock inside the payroll plan. Gusto Simple at $109 a month for 10 people is the cheapest complete answer on this page, and Plus at $200 adds the time tools and workforce reports most growing teams reach for next. Our Gusto pricing guide costs out the Simple-to-Plus step at other sizes, and the Rippling vs Gusto comparison and Gusto vs ADP comparison place it against the platforms it is usually shortlisted with.

Pick BambooHR if the company is past 25 people, has someone whose job title includes HR, and needs reviews, compensation planning or a serious hiring pipeline. Its per-employee pricing is flat and public, the volume discount only improves it, and the payroll add-on exists for the day you want one vendor. Budget for a quote before you commit, because the add-on prices are the part of the bill BambooHR will not print. The BambooHR vs HiBob comparison covers the other HRIS most BambooHR shoppers evaluate.

Pick neither as a first system if you have five people and no HR process: how much an HRIS costs and how much payroll costs for a small business show where cheaper stacks start, and the best HRIS for small business ranking and best payroll software ranking add the third candidates.

How we compared

We read BambooHR's pricing page and payroll page, and Gusto's three plan sign-up pages, pricing page, payroll features page, HR page and time tools page, all on 17 October 2026. Every scenario total is our multiplication of those list rates before tax and before BambooHR's unpublished volume discount. HRpresso runs no test lab and holds no account with either vendor, so nothing here is a negotiated rate, a support timing or a hands-on result. The Toolradar figures come from Toolradar's October 2026 rankings and tool profiles.

FAQ

Is BambooHR cheaper than Gusto?

Not for a small team. BambooHR Core charges a flat $250 a month for 25 employees or fewer, while Gusto Simple costs $49 plus $6 per person, which is $109 for 10 people and $199 for 25. Above 25 people BambooHR's $10 per employee rate becomes competitive on the HR seat alone, but its payroll add-on has no published price, so the full BambooHR bill needs a quote.

Does BambooHR include payroll?

No. BambooHR Payroll is an add-on to the Core, Pro or Elite plan, limited to US-based employees, with federal, state and local tax filing, direct deposit, W-2 creation, multi-rate pay and garnishments. BambooHR publishes no price for it, only a 15% discount when Payroll and Benefits Administration are bought together with a plan.

Does Gusto have an HRIS?

Gusto includes HR tools rather than a full HRIS: onboarding checklists, document storage with e-signature, job posts and offer letters, performance review templates, goal tracking and anonymous surveys. It lacks BambooHR's custom report builder, compensation planning and the hiring limits of 25 or 50 open jobs that Pro and Elite carry.

Can BambooHR and Gusto work together?

Yes. BambooHR lists more than 150 integration partners and Gusto integrates with accounting and time tools such as QuickBooks, Xero and Homebase. Running both costs two subscriptions: $359 a month at 10 people on BambooHR Core and Gusto Simple, and $849 at 50 people, against $680 for Gusto Plus on its own.

Which is better for a company with hourly staff?

Gusto, on published pricing. Time tracking, scheduling and time-off syncing are included on Gusto Plus at $80 a month plus $12 per person. BambooHR covers the same ground with its Time and Attendance add-on, which handles shift scheduling, break tracking and overtime, but the add-on carries no public price.

Does either offer a free trial or a free plan?

Neither publishes a free plan. Gusto offers free account setup and says you pay nothing until you run payroll, with month-to-month billing you can cancel at any time. BambooHR's pricing page offers month-to-month or extended terms and a 15% discount for registered nonprofits, but lists no free trial.
