TL;DR

SmartRecruiters is worth it for mid-size and large employers that hire at volume and want AI screening and scheduling inside the ATS, and less so for a small team that hires a few people a year. The Essential plan starts at $14,995, and Professional, High Volume and Complete are priced by sales.

That entry price is about four times Workable Standard at $3,588 a year and three times Ashby Foundations at $400 a month. SAP completed its purchase of SmartRecruiters on September 11, 2025, and says existing customers can keep using it with SAP or any other HR system. Prices were read on SmartRecruiters' pricing page on October 17, 2026.

SmartRecruiters has always sold to companies where recruiting is a department, not a side job for the office manager. The SAP acquisition sharpened that: SmartRecruiters is now the recruiting layer SAP folds into SuccessFactors, while still being sold on its own. For a buyer the question is whether a platform priced and built for corporate and high-volume hiring is the right size for your hiring plan.

HRpresso data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 39 ATS tools as of October 17, 2026, and 41% of them are free, freemium or open source, per its ATS ranking. SmartRecruiters is in the other 59%. On Toolradar it is listed as an alternative to 26 tools, joint 16th of 412 HR and recruiting tools, while Greenhouse leads the ATS category at 74.

This review covers each plan, the one published price, how the AI features are packaged, and how Greenhouse, Workable, Ashby and Lever compare. For the full category, see our applicant tracking systems ranking.

What is SmartRecruiters?

SmartRecruiters is an applicant tracking system and recruiting platform. Its SmartOS platform covers the ATS, candidate relationship management, offer management, onboarding, an agency portal, SMS messaging, job distribution and dynamic interview scheduling. On top sits Winston, its AI layer: Winston Companion is the AI-powered hiring agent for screening and scheduling, Winston Match is the AI talent matching engine, and Winston Chat is a conversational assistant for candidates.

SAP owns the company since September 11, 2025. SAP's announcement says SmartRecruiters customers keep the flexibility to use it with SAP or other HCM systems, so a company running Workday or BambooHR is not forced onto SuccessFactors.

How SmartRecruiters works

Buying starts on the pricing page, where Essential shows a starting price and the other three plans route to sales. You pick a tier by hiring profile: Essential for the fundamentals, Professional for corporate hiring with the AI hiring agent and matching engine, High Volume for retail, seasonal, hospitality and healthcare hiring with AI screening and candidate chat, and Complete for large enterprises that mix skilled and volume roles.

Once live, recruiters work in the ATS with built-in workflow templates, hiring managers review candidates in the same system, and candidates are reached by SMS, WhatsApp or online messaging. SMS and job distribution are metered: limits are low on Essential, medium on Professional and high on High Volume and Complete, which matters if you post many requisitions or text candidates at scale.

SmartRecruiters key features

AI-powered hiring agent
Winston Companion handles repetitive screening and scheduling tasks. It starts on Professional, so the Essential price does not include the AI the product is marketed on.
AI talent matching
Winston Match ranks candidates for a role and suggests matches proactively. Useful when one requisition draws hundreds of applicants, less so for a team filling niche roles one at a time.
Candidate screening and chat
AI-powered candidate screening and Winston Chat, which guides applicants and suggests jobs, start on High Volume. They suit frontline hiring where speed decides whether a candidate accepts.
Candidate messaging
SMS, WhatsApp and online messaging are built in, with volume limits set by plan. Texting is how hourly candidates respond, so check the limit before you pick a tier.
CRM and job distribution
A candidate CRM and job distribution come with every plan, and distribution volume rises with the tier. Teams that post many jobs at once will feel the Essential limit first.
Offer management and onboarding
Offers and new-hire onboarding are part of SmartOS on every plan, so the hand-off from candidate to employee stays in one system before the HRIS takes over.

SmartRecruiters pricing

SmartRecruiters prints one price on its pricing page: a starting figure for Essential, with no billing period stated, while the other three plans show Contact Sales. Read on October 17, 2026. Our comparison sets that entry price against the published ATS plans of its rivals: Workable Standard costs about a quarter as much a year for companies of 1 to 20 employees, Premier is $7,188 a year, and Ashby Foundations is $400 a month for up to 100 employees, or $4,800 a year before Ashby's 10% annual discount.

If Essential is an annual fee, a company hiring 30 people a year pays about $500 per hire in software before any add-ons, against roughly $120 per hire on Workable Standard. Greenhouse and Lever publish no prices, so the realistic comparison for a mid-size team is three quotes side by side. The per-hire figures are our arithmetic on list prices.

SmartRecruiters pros and cons

What we like

  • A full SmartOS stack on every plan: ATS, CRM, offers, onboarding, SMS and scheduling
  • High Volume adds AI screening and candidate chat built for retail, hospitality and healthcare hiring
  • Works with SAP SuccessFactors or other HCM systems, per SAP's acquisition announcement

What could be better

  • The AI hiring agent and matching engine are not in Essential, so the printed price excludes the headline features
  • Only one plan has a price, and that page does not state the billing period

Who SmartRecruiters is for

SmartRecruiters fits mid-size and enterprise employers with a recruiting team, a steady flow of requisitions and a reason to want AI screening, especially SAP SuccessFactors customers. Its own plan table lists Essential for startups to mid-size companies, Professional for mid-size and corporate hiring, High Volume for retail, seasonal, hospitality and healthcare, and Complete for large global enterprises.

It is a poor fit for a 40-person company hiring ten people a year. That team pays a five-figure entry price for features it will not use, while Workable or Ashby cover the same core ATS job for a fraction of the cost. If structured interviewing matters more than volume, compare our Greenhouse review first.

The bottom line

Buy SmartRecruiters if you hire at volume, have a recruiting team, and want AI screening and candidate chat in the ATS, or if you already run SAP SuccessFactors. Budget past the Essential starting figure: the AI features that set SmartRecruiters apart sit on the quoted tiers, so the real comparison is Professional or High Volume against a Greenhouse quote.

For a smaller team, Workable (Toolradar profile) and Ashby (Toolradar profile) cover the core ATS job at published prices. For structured hiring, compare Greenhouse and Lever, or read our Greenhouse vs Lever comparison. Teams focused on AI sourcing should also see our AI recruiting tools guide. SmartRecruiters' Toolradar entry is at SmartRecruiters on Toolradar.

Methodology: we read SmartRecruiters' pricing page, SAP's acquisition announcement and the pricing pages of four direct competitors on October 17, 2026, then compared entry prices and plan contents. We did not use SmartRecruiters ourselves, so this review covers plans and pricing, not day-to-day performance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SmartRecruiters cost in 2026?

SmartRecruiters publishes one price: the Essential plan starts at $14,995. Professional, High Volume and Complete are quoted by sales, and the pricing page does not state Essential's billing period. Prices were checked on SmartRecruiters' pricing page on October 17, 2026.

Is SmartRecruiters worth it?

It is worth it for mid-size and enterprise employers that hire at volume and will use AI screening, matching and candidate chat, which sit on the quoted Professional and High Volume plans. For a small company hiring a handful of people a year, Workable Standard at $3,588 a year or Ashby Foundations cover the core ATS for much less.

Did SAP buy SmartRecruiters?

Yes. SAP completed its acquisition of SmartRecruiters on September 11, 2025. SAP says SmartRecruiters customers can keep using it with SAP or with other HCM systems, and that more than 4,000 organizations use it.

Does SmartRecruiters have AI features?

Yes, under the Winston name. Winston Companion is an AI hiring agent for screening and scheduling, Winston Match is a talent matching engine, and Winston Chat is a conversational assistant for candidates. The first two start on Professional and candidate screening and chat on High Volume, so Essential does not include them.

SmartRecruiters vs Greenhouse: which should I choose?

Choose SmartRecruiters for high-volume or frontline hiring, where AI screening, candidate chat and SMS limits matter. Choose Greenhouse for structured professional hiring with interview kits and scorecards on every plan. Greenhouse publishes no price, and SmartRecruiters prints only its Essential plan, so get both quotes.
