TL;DR

SurePayroll is worth it in 2026 for a business of one to three people, or a family paying a nanny, that wants taxes filed for the lowest monthly bill. Full Service has the lowest base fee among the full-service plans we priced, so a solo owner pays $36 a month and a 2-person company $43, under Patriot, Square, Gusto and OnPay at that size.

The per-worker fee is what turns it around. The bill ties Patriot Full Service at four people and costs more from five, and a 10-person team pays $99 a month plus a year-end form charge that Patriot and OnPay include. Paychex owns SurePayroll, and the household plan, which includes one employee, is the strongest reason to pick it.

  • Best for: Owners paying one to three people, and families paying a nanny, who want taxes filed at the lowest bill.
  • Price as of October 18, 2026: Full Service $29/mo + $7 per worker; household $39/mo with one employee; year-end forms billed yearly.
  • Paychex's self-serve payroll brand, with the lowest base fee here and a per-worker fee that makes it pricier from five people.
  • Year-end forms: W-2 and 1099-NEC forms are billed once a year on top of the monthly fee, at a base charge plus a fee per form.
  • Extra states: The first state is included and multi-state payroll adds $9.99 a month; local tax areas carry a separate fee.
  • Household plan: Nanny and household payroll includes one employee in its monthly price, marked down from $45.
  • Alternatives covered: Patriot Payroll, Square Payroll, OnPay, Gusto, Paychex Flex

Pros

  • The lowest base fee in this review makes a 2-person payroll $43 a month, the cheapest full-service bill here at that size.
  • The household plan files federal and state taxes and Schedule H with one employee included.
  • Multi-state payroll is one flat monthly fee, under Patriot's $12 for each extra state.

Cons

  • Year-end W-2 and 1099-NEC forms are billed separately once a year, while Patriot and OnPay include them.
  • The per-worker fee makes the bill tie Patriot at four people and cost more from five, reaching $204 a month at 25.
Full Service priceFull Service files and deposits federal and state payroll taxes, and a 10-person team pays $99 a month for it at list.

SurePayroll is the cheapest way into a Paychex-owned payroll service, and for very small employers it is cheap in absolute terms too. The pricing is built around a low base fee and a higher per-worker fee, which is the right shape for a solo owner and the wrong one for a 15-person shop. Toolradar data: the 22 payroll tools with a published price on Toolradar's payroll ranking, out of 74 payroll tools the directory we run tracked on October 17, 2026, have a median cheapest paid plan of $22 a month, so SurePayroll's base fee sits just above the middle of the market before any worker is added.

Below we price Full Service, No Tax Filing and the household plan, add the fees that sit outside the monthly sticker, and run the same teams of 2, 5, 10 and 25 people through Patriot, Square Payroll, Gusto and OnPay. Every price was read on the vendor's own pricing page on October 18, 2026, and the arithmetic is ours.

What is SurePayroll?

SurePayroll is an online payroll service for US small businesses and household employers, and its site footer reads "A Paychex Company". It runs separately from Paychex Flex, the parent's main product, which sells four packages (Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete) through a sales quote. SurePayroll is the self-serve alternative: you enroll online in a few minutes, see the price before you sign and cancel without a contract.

The small-business Full Service plan calculates pay, files and deposits federal and state payroll taxes, runs unlimited payrolls with free 2-day direct deposit, reports new hires and gives employers and employees a mobile app and online pay stubs. SurePayroll's plan comparison adds a no-IRS-penalties guarantee on Full Service. A No Tax Filing plan keeps the software and leaves the tax deposits to you, and a separate nanny and household plan handles Schedule H for families who employ someone at home.

How SurePayroll works

You create the account online, add company, bank, tax and employee details, and SurePayroll's onboarding team helps at no charge, including when you switch mid-year from another provider. After that you enter hours or let AutoPayroll repeat a salaried run on schedule, approve, and money lands by direct deposit two days later. Contractors and W-2 employees sit in the same system, with multiple pay rates, bonuses and unlimited off-cycle runs.

Billing is monthly with no commitment: the base fee, plus a fee for each worker paid, plus any add-ons. Year-end W-2 and 1099-NEC forms are billed once a year rather than monthly, which is easy to miss when comparing sticker prices. On the No Tax Filing plan, payroll processing runs on a 4-day schedule unless you pay to upgrade it to 2 days. Support is live by phone and chat.

SurePayroll key features

The lowest bill for one to three workersEssential
The base fee is the lowest among the full-service plans in this review, so a solo owner pays $36 a month, and a 2-person company pays less here than on Patriot, Square, Gusto Simple or OnPay. Below four workers, nothing else here with a public price files your taxes for less.
Household and nanny payroll with Schedule HEssential
The household plan includes one employee in its monthly price and files federal and state taxes automatically, with state tax ID registration help and a signature-ready Schedule H. Many small-business payroll tools do not sell a household plan at all, so a family employing a nanny has fewer real choices.
Unlimited runs, AutoPayroll and 2-day deposit
Every plan runs unlimited payrolls, including off-cycle bonus runs, and AutoPayroll repeats a fixed salaried payroll on schedule. Direct deposit is free on a 2-day schedule on Full Service; there is no next-day or same-day option listed, which QuickBooks Payroll sells on its workforce plans.
No Tax Filing plan for owners who file themselves
SurePayroll's payroll page lists a No Tax Filing plan at a lower base and per-employee fee than Full Service, with tax deposits and filings left to you and 4-day processing unless you add the $7.99 a month upgrade to 2-day. It suits an owner whose accountant already files the 941s, and nobody else.
Paychex add-ons on tap
Workers' comp, health insurance, 401(k) plans on a custom quote and employment law support from $30 a month are sold by the same company. An owner who expects to grow into Paychex services can buy them without switching vendors, though each is priced separately.
Timeclock and accounting connections
Accounting software integration costs $4.99 a month, and timeclock integration is billed per employee on top of a small base fee. There is no built-in scheduling or HR suite, so a team that needs those pays for a second tool.

SurePayroll pricing

SurePayroll's pricing page lists Full Service at $29 a month plus $7 per worker, with the first state included, multi-state payroll for $9.99 a month and a separate fee in areas with local taxes, which the plan comparison sets at the same monthly rate. Year-end W-2 and 1099-NEC forms are billed once a year at $50 plus $5 per form. The household plan is $39 a month with one employee included. Accounting integration, timeclock integration and employment law support are priced as add-ons in the table below. Prices were read on October 18, 2026 on the SurePayroll pricing page, with the No Tax Filing plan and the local tax fee from the SurePayroll payroll page and plan comparison.

Scenario one, 2 workers in one state: SurePayroll costs $43 a month, against $47 on Patriot Full Service, $47 on Square Payroll ($35 plus $6 per person) and $61 on Gusto Simple or OnPay (both $49 plus the same per-person fee). SurePayroll is the cheapest by $4 a month. The year-end forms add $60 a year, which leaves it within $1 of Patriot over the year.

Scenario two, 5 workers: SurePayroll is $64, Patriot $62, Square $65 and Gusto Simple or OnPay $79. Patriot has taken the lead, and once the $75 annual form bill is spread over 12 months SurePayroll lands near $70 a month, behind Square as well.

Scenario three, 10 workers: $99 a month on SurePayroll plus the form charge, so $1,288 for the year. Patriot comes to $87 a month or $1,044 a year with forms included, Square to $95, and OnPay to $109 a month or $1,308 a year with forms included. At 25 workers SurePayroll is $204 a month, against $162 on Patriot, $185 on Square and $199 on Gusto Simple or OnPay.

The promotion changes year one, not the list price. Under the terms posted for October 2026, new clients who enroll by October 31, 2026 and stay 12 months pay no base or per-worker fees in months 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11; year-end, multi-state and integration fees are excluded. A 10-person team then pays $594 in payroll fees, plus the form charge, in the first year. Methodology: list prices in USD before tax, read on each vendor's page on October 18, 2026, multiplied out for each headcount. Competitor prices come from the Patriot, Square Payroll, Gusto Simple and OnPay pricing pages, and the promotion from SurePayroll's terms.

SurePayroll pros and cons

What we like

  • The lowest base fee in this review makes a 2-person payroll $43 a month, the cheapest full-service bill here at that size.
  • The household plan files federal and state taxes and Schedule H with one employee included.
  • Multi-state payroll is one flat monthly fee, under Patriot's $12 for each extra state.

What could be better

  • Year-end W-2 and 1099-NEC forms are billed separately once a year, while Patriot and OnPay include them.
  • The per-worker fee makes the bill tie Patriot at four people and cost more from five, reaching $204 a month at 25.

Who SurePayroll is for

Buy SurePayroll if you pay one to three people in one state and want taxes filed for the smallest monthly bill. It suits the solo S-corp owner paying a salary, the two-person practice and the small office whose accountant wants a Paychex name on the reports. It is also the plan to price first for a family employing a nanny or caregiver, because the household plan files Schedule H with one employee included in the price.

Look elsewhere from about five employees. Patriot is cheaper from that point and includes year-end forms, and our Patriot Payroll review runs the same headcounts. A team paying people in several states should price OnPay, which includes every state, before adding SurePayroll's multi-state fee. A team that wants next-day deposit, benefits brokerage and onboarding in one app should read the Gusto pricing breakdown.

If you are weighing SurePayroll against its parent, the Paychex Flex review explains what the quoted packages add, and cheaper Paychex alternatives lists the other self-serve options.

The bottom line

Buy SurePayroll when you pay one to three people, or one household employee, and the question is the smallest bill for payroll with taxes filed. At those sizes its low base fee wins every comparison on this page, and the household plan has few direct rivals. Pass from about five workers, where Patriot Full Service costs less each month and includes the year-end forms SurePayroll bills separately, or when you need next-day deposit or a built-in HR suite.

Budget the whole year, not the sticker. For a 10-person team, the monthly fee becomes $1,288 a year once the forms are added, and every extra state or local tax area adds a monthly fee. The free alternating months cut year one sharply, but only on the posted terms and only for new clients.

For the wider market, see our best payroll software for small business ranking, the small-business payroll cost guide, the QuickBooks Payroll review and the free payroll software page. Owners filing their own taxes should read how to run payroll yourself before choosing No Tax Filing. Toolradar profiles for Paychex and Patriot Software carry their catalog data.

Frequently asked questions

Is SurePayroll worth it in 2026?

Yes for an employer paying one to three people, or a family paying one household employee, who wants federal and state taxes filed for the lowest monthly bill. From about five workers Patriot Full Service costs less and includes year-end forms, so SurePayroll stops being the cheap choice for a growing team.

How much does SurePayroll cost per month?

Full Service costs $29 a month plus $7 per worker, as checked on SurePayroll's pricing page on October 18, 2026. A 10-person team pays $99 a month. Year-end forms are billed on top once a year, and each extra state or local tax area adds $9.99 a month.

How much is SurePayroll for a nanny?

The Nanny and Household plan costs $39 a month, marked down from $45, and includes one employee. It files and deposits federal and state taxes automatically, helps register for a state tax ID and prepares the W-2 and a signature-ready Schedule H.

Does SurePayroll charge for W-2s?

Yes. Year-end W-2 and 1099-NEC forms are billed annually as a $50 base fee plus a charge per form, so a 10-person team pays $100 a year. Patriot Full Service and OnPay include year-end forms in the monthly price.

Is SurePayroll owned by Paychex?

Yes. SurePayroll's site identifies it as a Paychex company. It is sold separately from Paychex Flex, with published self-serve prices and no contract, while Paychex Flex's Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete packages are priced by quote.

Is SurePayroll cheaper than Gusto?

Yes below 20 workers. SurePayroll Full Service costs $43 a month for 2 people, against $61 on Gusto Simple, and stays cheaper until the two meet at 20 workers. Above that Gusto Simple costs less before SurePayroll's year-end form fee is even counted.
