Checkr Review 2026: Pricing, Pros, Cons and Alternatives
Workforce package prices, the court and database fees those packages leave out, and four vendors an HR team can price the same week.
Checkr is worth it in 2026 when a US employer wants a published employment-screening price and a public fee list for courts and databases. Workforce Basic is $29.99 per report and stops at a national criminal search. Essential is $59.99 per report and adds unlimited county search plus identity verification. Those package prices exclude pass-through fees.
Complete adds state and federal criminal search. GoodHire, labeled on its own site as a Checkr company, prints the same three starting prices and then asks for a quote at 50 checks a year. Certn's US Complete package is the lower published county option, with a seven-year address window rather than an unlimited county search.
Key factsBest for: US employers that want published report prices and a public…
- Pay-as-you-go employment screening with three printed workforce packages and a separate fee schedule for courts and databases.
- Workforce entry: Basic is the lowest printed employment package, billed per report, and it excludes pass-through fees.
- County coverage: Essential is the first workforce package that includes unlimited county criminal search.
- Contracts: The small-business page says pay-as-you-go screening has no contracts or minimums.
- Free employer plan: Workforce packages have none. A personal profile is free and is not a hiring report.
Pros
- The small-business page states pay-as-you-go screening with no contracts or minimums, and the three workforce packages are printed per report.
- The passthrough page prices Pennsylvania PATCH access at $22.44 and says third-party fees are billed at cost with no markup.
- Enterprise lists 200-plus ATS integrations, and international criminal checks include passthrough fees in the package price.
Cons
- A current-employer check can still add The Work Number's $119.90 access fee on top of Checkr's verification charge.
- Clinic drug tests start at $60, onsite tests at $37, and the $10 floor is the random test, with a $90 expanded-hours fee possible.
- Trustpilot sits at 1.3 from 595 reviews in Toolradar's count, against 4.5 from 458 reviews on G2, so candidates and employers disagree.

Checkr is the screening vendor to open when finance wants a number before a sales call, and then wants the second number the package leaves out.
The package price is a floor. Court access, DMV access, and employment databases are billed beside it, at cost, on a list Checkr publishes.
Toolradar data: Checkr is named as an alternative to 4 tools in Toolradar's Compliance set of 213, where the median tool is named as an alternative to 2, as of October 2026.
The same Checkr profile averages public reviews at 2.9 out of 5 across 1,053, with G2 at 4.5 from 458 reviews and Trustpilot at 1.3 from 595, last checked September 17, 2026. Employers and candidates are not scoring the same experience.

How we compared: whether a dollar is printed before a call, whether county search sits inside that dollar, and which fees the invoice can still add. This is a read of vendor pages, not a placed order. The method is on how we rate.
Checkr buttons on this page may be affiliate links, and that does not change the fee arithmetic.
What is Checkr?
An employment background check is a report an employer orders, with the candidate's consent, before a hire. Checkr sells that report in workforce packages, and the same site also sells tenant screening, personal checks, mortgage verifications, and a trust product.
Those tabs are not interchangeable. A tenant Starter at $24.99 per report is a landlord product, not the employment package.
The workforce trio shares an SSN trace, a sex offender registry search, a global watchlist search, and a national criminal search. Basic stops there. Essential adds identity verification and unlimited county criminal search. Complete adds unlimited state criminal search and a federal criminal search.
Personal checks are a different product and start at $49.99. A free personal profile lets someone share verifications with an employer. It does not replace the report you order on a candidate.
GoodHire's pricing page labels its logo "GoodHire, A Checkr Company" and points its fee explanation at Checkr's passthrough list. The two brands share a starting price card. They do not share a buying path, which the GoodHire review covers from that brand's side.
How Checkr works
A small team can open a workforce account and order by the report. Checkr's small-business page says those screenings are pay-as-you-go, with no contracts or minimums. Enterprise, for custom workflows, is still a conversation with sales. The pricing page does not impose GoodHire's 50-check gate on the three printed packages.
The candidate side is consent, then a report, then a decision. If the report may change the decision, Checkr's small-business page points employers to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, including a chance for the candidate to dispute the file before a final hiring decision.
In places that also require a paper copy, Checkr mails the letter with the email and charges $7 per letter. That postage is a separate line, not part of the package.
Identity verification is inside Essential and Complete. On Basic it is a $4.99 add-on. A role that needs a county search should not start on Basic and add the search later. The add-on list prices a standalone county criminal search at $25, and court access fees can still apply on top, while Essential includes unlimited county search in the package.
Checkr's pricing page says 97% of customers report faster turnaround than the competition, and it cites 200-plus countries and territories. Both lines are Checkr's own claims. This page did not time a report. County courts and manual records still set the clock on many files, whatever the package is called.
Checkr key features
Checkr pricing
Checkr's pricing page lists workforce Basic, Essential, and Complete per report, and each card says the price does not include pass-through fees. Enterprise is contact sales. Our arithmetic for a year of 12 office hires on Essential, at the package price and before any access fee, is $719.88. That is list-price math, not a quote.
The fees that move the invoice are on the passthrough page. Pennsylvania PATCH access is $22.44. Employment-database fees on that page run from $17.95 at AmCheck to $119.90 at The Work Number.
Education access at National Student Clearinghouse is $6.95 to $41.95, and it varies by school. One Essential report, a current-employer verification at $12.50, and The Work Number fee add up to $192.39 before any court fee.
A driver hire is a different stack: Essential plus the $9.50 motor vehicle report is $69.49 before the state DMV fee, which varies and is passed through at cost.
Drug testing is not one rate. A clinic test starts at $60, an onsite test starts at $37, and the $10 floor is the random test. A test in expanded hours, weeknights or weekends, can add $90. Healthcare sanctions (FACIS) are $6 at Level 1 and $15.50 at Level 3.
Assess Lite is included. Assess Standard is $2.49 per report and Assess Premium is $4 per report. Continuous criminal monitoring is $1.70 per person per month, and that price includes passthrough fees. Continuous motor vehicle monitoring is $2.50 per enrolled driver per month.
International Basic starts at $32 per check, and Checkr says passthrough fees for international criminal and adverse-media searches are included in that price. That is the opposite of the US workforce packages.
For the wider market range, what a background check costs sets these lines next to other vendors.

Who Checkr is for
Checkr fits a US employer that screens in modest volume, needs county records on most roles, and wants the fee list in writing before the first invoice. The small-business page is built for that buyer: order when you hire, without a minimum.
It fits poorly in three cases. A team that needs one all-in number before ordering will not get it, because courts and databases bill after the package. A company that already lives in GoodHire and is under 50 checks a year is looking at the same starting prices under another name.
An employer hiring mostly outside the US should price International Basic, where passthrough is inside the package, rather than assume the US Essential card travels.
Certn is the published-price alternative when a seven-year county window is enough. HireRight and First Advantage are the quote path when the program has to follow a regulated industry rule and no public card will do.
Accurate's small-business page also prints no package price: it says there is no monthly fee and no minimum, then asks you to talk to the team. Its Toolradar profile is there if you want the directory view.
Ranked context sits in best background check services.
Best Checkr alternatives
If Checkr is not the right fit, these are the closest options.

The bottom line
Buy Checkr when county coverage has to be on a public card and you can budget the access fees beside it. Essential is the package that matches most US office roles. Twelve of those reports are $719.88 before a single court or database fee. Read the passthrough list before you promise finance a per-hire number.
Skip it when the hire is mostly international and you want passthrough inside the price, or when a regulated program needs a custom scope from HireRight or First Advantage.
GoodHire does not win on the starting price. Certn can, if a seven-year county window is the search you actually need. Profiles for GoodHire, Certn, and HireRight sit on Toolradar for a side-by-side read.
Connectors matter once the price is acceptable. Check the fit against Greenhouse, Lever, and the ATS roundup before you assume the 200-plus integration claim covers your stack.
Compliance chores around the report are in HR compliance software.
